Need Opinions about Marina Manager's Actions

I understand where you are coming from John. The care he shows for his own boat is most likely how he will treat others around him when eyes are not watching. It would be tough to for go the savings though, but I think I would cry more over damage to my boat than a little more money if I had it. Plus, I NEED those quiet nights and mornings on my boat to RECHARGE so I can pay for my slip!

Good Luck buddy!

Here's my opinion for what it's worth.... I know your new neighbor made a 'grand entrance' in a bad way, but why don't you give him the benefit of the doubt? Give it a month before you discount the guy and his boat. He might be a great guy and you may end up having something in common. Offer him a beer and shoot the $hit with him for an hour here and there. Maybe you'll find out why he had trouble getting his boat in between the pilings when he arrived? Maybe you can give him some lessons? Who knows, you might make a friend out of him? Either way, give it some time before you decide to leave.

But, the old guy's boat is wider than the slip next to John. Giving him the benefit of the doubt is great, but who is going to replace John's dock lines (6 x $30 ea. ave.) every month as the larger boat grinds up and down against the pilings on John's lines twice for every tide change......which is sometimes twice a day in our area.

Can a new set of cleats or rings (I don't know your specific setup down there) be added to avoid the dock line issue?

I know we all love John around here, platonically of course.

Is it possible John upset someone and this is the marina manager’s way of getting John to move on? Could the manager be wingle’ss brother or something?

John, why not keep your boat a the Marne Max marina??? Isn't that where Frank is? I have been to Navy's marina but they can't handle a boat your size... Another inexpensive option would be to rent space behind a waterfront home...

Yes and no.............Marine Max has no marina or service here. They are leasing the show room and 2 slips from Treasure Island Marina. Treasure Island is still a servicing dealer for Sea Ray, Whaler, Grady White, Southwind, Parker, etc. boats, Cummins, Mercruiser, Yamaha and Honda and MM buys all their service from them. We have only one empty slip big enough for John's boat, and he knows about it. Big slips are scarce in these parts, and I think John was looking for a lower overhead situation because he is local. I don't like it, but I am wiling to pay a little more to get 24 hour security, 24/7/365 video loop, parking behind my boat, mechanics on site, and trusted people checking my boat every day because we are 450 miles away 1/2 the time.

Piece of mind comes with a price.... Although we are 5 minutes away from our boat, we ski every weekend in the winter and the boat is idle for 4-6 months. I want it protected and don't want to replace all of my canvas/glass/vinyl every other year..... So, I have a wonderful boathouse..... and pay a little extra for it:huh:

And with this my brethren.... I have hit 1,000 posts !!!!!! Woooooo F**ing Hooooooo !!!!!!!!!

I have been on the road for 4 days - Dominican Republic, Queens, and other 3rd world places. Marina Manager left a message on my phone. Oversized boat is gone. I'll have to see what that means. Frank is right - the boat literally rode up and down on the pilings with the tides - both sides. We may stick with the status quo, but what we have gleaned out of this experience is that we can be flexible. When we leave for the winter, I'll probably pack up and let the slip go. We'll see what happens when we decide to come back next spring. Thank you all for your inputs.

I enjoy meeting folks with experience. One of my best friends was my neighbor next door who passed 2 years ago. I didn't dislike the gentleman in the marina, just the entire scenario. We'll have to see what happens next. Both of our Sea Ray families in the marina told my wife that they were likely going to move when the new, local marina is complete due to the actions of our manager. He's a nice guy. He doesn't always think things through before acting. I like their whole family, but, we'll have to see what happens next.

Watching that boat arrive was like the Griswald's cousins showing up for the holidays in "Christmas Vacation," probably complete with the pump out. We have options. I'm looking forward to experiencing some of them. After 25 years in the military, I learned to not burn bridges. When we move on, we will leave our options open to return some day if the situation calls for it.

Wow that is funny there is a sunken boat there.....I feel your pain after we had an old houseboat smoke the dock this weekend due to some owner wiring issues. Long story short guy can't afford the boat so he is letting some folks live on it to help pay, they know nothing about boats and he had straight wired a sump pump and it burned up along with all the wiring. Fire dept thinks they should just sink the boat but owner shows up with Liability ins after we cut 12V wires and the marina decides to let the boat stay on the dock. How do they rest of us with expensive Sea Ray's on the dock feel.....NOT happy but what can we do. We should have just let it burn and untied it and pushed it out....but that isn't the "right" thing to do...

Just bing-mapped it and google mapped it. Looks like they got that sunken boat problem cleared up. Don't see John's boat in either pic.

Nice thing about having a boat, you can just move on to a new marina! I have a free loving pot smoking family next to me at home and I would have to sell my home to move....Guess what, I love them!!!!

That photo is really old. All of the covered slips from the center shack over to the right are no longer covered. I've never seen those covered. I had dinner at the house behind them in 1992, but I don't remember if they were covered then.
