I'm sure someone is gonna look at this and think... "huh - that's easy" but this is my first time pulling fuel injectors and what looks easy apparently has a trick to it :)

I'm trying to pull te injectors on my 5.0L MPI to have them professionally cleaned- It looks pretty easy - I've depressurized the system, taken loose the IAC bracket that sits on top of the fuel rails... taken off the 4 bolts holding the fuel rail in place and the rail is loose enough to wiggle slightly. At this time the fuel rail will not lift off - it's held in place by some mesterious force (no bolts - allready checked)

The question is now the normal procedure from here....
  1. Do I go ahead and unclip the fuel injectors from the rail before removing the rail (I've already unclipped the wires to them)?
  2. Are the injectors just held in place by the pressure from the fuel rail? there are no apparent bolts on them and I don't believe they are screwed in.
  3. Is it possible (or not recommended) to pull the rail with the injectors attached (making it easier to unclip the injectors from the rail)?
  4. Any helpful tips?
I've referenced the Mercruiser service manual but the only thing in there is an exploded view - no details on pulling it all appart :)

Thanks
Robb

The only thing I know is that the injectors are not screwed in. They have "O" ring(s) and a press fit into the engine.

thanks... we got everything disassebled tonight, but are still struglling with getting the injectors our of the block. they wiggle and spin, but that oring doesn't want to give and no matter how much we pull, they just won't come out - we can see the oring, just can't get the injectors extracted.

Are you sure there is not a lock clip on each injector that needs to slide out to remove. I have seen that on some engines.

Check manual 24 and all it has are 2" O "rings on the injector one for the fuel rail and one for the manifold

thanks guys... I'll give it another shot tommorrow. I'm thinking I just need to find someway to rig something to give me a little bit more leverage to pull them out. I guess being stuck in there for 8yrs they are going to be a bit more like me (stubborn).:smt021

Just a follow up on this one for anyone searching the forums and run into the same problem... (always hate finding threads left out there with no resolution when I'm searching).

Ended up spraying som PBBlaster lubricating fluid around the base of each injector and letting it sit for about 15min, after that 6 of the 8 popped right out with very little force. the other 2 still took a pair of vice grips wth an extra long handle to get enough leverage to pull them out.

Ended up getting the injectors tested and cleaned (they weren't off by much since I only use Valvetech non-ethonol fuel). Dropped them off at injectorrenew.com where he did a before and after test on flow and patterns. 3 of the injectors were off by just a hair. Put them back in (after putting bit of vasoline around each O-ring) reassembled everything and it purred like a kitten with warm milk.

That was a good idea to test the injectors! I had 2 brand new ones tested before I put them in and they were bad!!
