Official (1990-1993) 270/290 DA thread

I ran my (new to me) 1990 290 WOT for the first time this weekend. 4200 rpms at 29.9 per the gps. 1/2 tank of gas, some supplies for overnight, and three adults. Stayed on plane at 3200 @ 19 mph with tabs. Outdrive was fully down, probably would have done better if I had played with it a little more. Per gps went 57 miles and took 46 gallons to top it back off. Gas had come down to $4.41 a gallon.

I guess that perhaps it it running where it should be, but I am going to check the tac anyway just to be sure it is running accurate. The mechaninc at MM who has worked on the thing says that it is running right where it should be and I have known this guy for many years. He worked on the carb, then took the boat out ran it, then worked on it some more then ran it again. After that he felt that it was running right where it should be. I swear though the tac and gps say that it is running at about 27 or so at 3200. I run it there with the tabs for the most part fully up, and drive trimmed pretty far up also. I usually play with the drive and watch the gps until I get the most out of it at around the 3200 mark. I was told that if I keep it under 3400 I will stay out of the secondaries on the carb and that is what I have always tried to do. I will check the tac and make sure that it is running where it shows that it is. By the way I run it usually with about 1/2 tank of fuel, near full water tanks and what ever might be in the holding tank at the time. Plus all the stuff that my wife has put in every drawer and crevice on the boat. Thanks for all the input guys.

Thanks for the charger info guys! I'm running 26mph at 3600rpms. I top out at 4600rpms at 38mph gps. I'm running a 14.5" stainless 4 blade 17P cupped Merc prop. The factory Bravo I prop is a 19P Stainless Mirage. The Bravo 1 will run a bit faster than the Bravo II or Bravo III but requires more rpm to stay on plane (less prop surface). My boat handles best at 3800rpms at about 29mph but man it loves the fuel! I have not used tabs to stay on plane yet at lower rpms....only to level the boat. Cruising off plane I get 8.5mph at 2000rpms or 5.5mph at 1400rpms. Cruising uses alot less fuel and is relaxing. We ran 15 miles last night off plane and the fuel guage didn't move much at all! We had some friends over for a ride & dinner and there was plenty of room for 5 of us, Mike.

Went to the boat the weekend and installed the seats I had recovered - you can the terrible shape the corner back rest is in. Not sure how to remove it.

I don't know how to get that upholstry out, but, when you do it out, you might consider putting a cupholder in the corner. I don't have a picture of that corner, but, of the opposite corner to show a cup holder.

After replacing all the bellows still getting a bunch of water in the bilge. I also replaced the exhaust rubber tube at the elbow that was cracked. I think it just happening while underway. Looks like I need to run the boat while in the bilge. Im sure thats going to be fun.

wow, my 1990 270 bravo 1, 19p. with no gen, no ac, can but barely = stays on plane at 21mph,
cruises best in the rough waves at 24 mph, at 3100rpm and 28 mph at 3400 rpms
WOT = 39mph with 4 people full gear and with full tanks,
when I ran it compelely empty and with only 3 people onboard I was able to see 41mph. ofcourse that was only for a minute or two, I dont like running the ol'-gal over 3500
when its loaded down im sure it would have to be down hill with a tail wind to see over 40mph :)

you sure do have to adjust the tabs alot in windy conditions with this narrow tall hull, after riding in a few heavier boats this past weekend Im thinking of listing mine for sale and
upgrading a few sizes. I have found a few 98 and newer 330's that I like the look and size of

I STILL HAVE not removed the broken 12x12" hatch glass from my boat, the window frame is glued on with ALOT of glue from the factory, they sure didnt want a leak.
does anyone know of a way to just get the hatch off without removing the frame? it appears the window is just eurethaned into the frame, and the frame is held on with metal pin or rod style hinges that are not removable. Im afraid trying to heat, pry or cut the glue loose may scratch the top deck of the boat.

BTW my arch was not full of foam like that, it sure made fishing the wires a lot easier than I expected.

Bought new in 2001 - 270 Sundancer with 7.4 MPI and Bravo III turning factory 22P SS props. With 100 gallons of gas, 28 gallons of water, 4 people, and fully provisioned - minimum planing is 27 MPH (GPS) @ 3400 RPM and no fiddling with trim tabs - Best cruise is 30-31 MPH (GPS) @ 3600 RPM and 1.8 MPG. Top end is 40 MPH @ 4400 RPM.

A 2001 270 is a totally different boat than we are discussing in this thread.

I'm not sure, but I think mine is better on gas than that, or I hope so. One of these days, I'll get to use it go find out.

I am not sure how different mine is.. I have a 1994 290.. Single 7.4 with a Bravo III 23P Top speed is about 33-35 with just my wife and me. Full tank of gas and full water. I do have the Gen. I think it planes up around 25-28. I have some 21 pitch props I am going swap out. When I have four people on and a full load I can get up to 4000 rpm and almost can't get it to plane with trim tabs.

The galley light fixture uses two (2) 15W - 120V appliance bulbs, bayonette base.
Does anyone happen to know if these can be purchased at HD or Lowes?

Ok....dumb question here! What does my Accessory Switch do on the dash? Just realized it's always been off. I know my factory depthfinder is faded out....is that it's power switch or what. Thanks, Mike.

Accessory switch turns on my VHF radio and depth finder.

My accessory switch turned on my depth finder before I re-worked my dash.
