Official (1990-1993) 270/290 DA thread

What size is it? I have one, its just the smoked glass and hatch, no trim ring, no closures or hardware, but I dont remeber the size. Let me knowinside and outside diameter and ill measure mine.

thanks Leatherlungs
I just called my marina and left a message to get measurements.
Hopefully i will hear back soon. Is the one you have off of the same model 270? My trim ring and hardware are in great shape, all i need is the glass/hatch

my email is heath@stevescarstar.com if you need to contact me as i will be out of town until tuesday. Im trying to get a replacement by the 11th as thats my next trip to the lake

if it wasnt such a "task" i would upload a photo of mine!

Thanks again
Heath

on hold as of now, due to the newer hatches are a little taller, so to keep it an exact match i will have a new glass made and installed.

thanks

Hey guys. i'm looking at a '92 270. it has a 454 with bravo II. 650 hours for $9800 with trailer. Any suggestions/helpful hints?

1 - Drain the outdrive oil and check for water in the oil and excessive metal particulate (a pressure test is also in order)

2 – Props okay?

3 - Compression check the engine while warm. All cylinders should be above 100 and within 10% of each other

4 - Canvas in good shape? You will get serious sticker shock if it needs replaced (3 to 4K)

5 - Maintenance records available?

6 - Freshwater boat ? this would be a good thing.

7 - Have someone hold the steering wheel firmly, now try to move each outdrive side to side...does it move more than a half inch or so? gimble ring possible worn out.

8 - Refrigerator work? I put a new one in last year...$750...no kidding.

9 - Is it in the water? does the bilge have water in it? if it does, you may have a leak.

10 - Check that all gauges work. My fuel gauge did not work. I changed the sending unit in the top of the fuel tank. It was very tough to get at....very tough.

11 - When was the last time the exhaust was serviced, as in manifolds and riser inspected and gaskets changed? this is the biggest killer of marine engines and is often neglected

12 - Is the transom solid ? remove a few screws from the trim tabs.....wet wood revealed? (of course reseal with 3m 5200 when you put them back). take lots of time at the transom...any sign of moisture penetration near through hulls... inside or out?

13 - Sea trial the boat with five or six adults on board.....should reach 4600-4800 rpm at wide open throttle.

14 - When were u joints / gimble bearing / all bellows last serviced or replaced?

15 - When was impeller last changed?

16 - Confirm A/C works...run it while checking generator (must be in water of course to run AC or generator)

17 - Trailer? what is your tow vehicle? you are looking at well over 12k lbs of boat and trailer....not your run of the mill bowrider....and a beam over 8' 6" means technically you need a permit to haul it.

18 - Check that both trim tabs work....you need them.

19 - Check that the outdrives trim up fully and back down.

20 - Toilet work?

21 - All freshwater spigots work? no leaks in freshwater system?....pump should turn off a few seconds after a faucet is shut off.

22- Look under EVERY cushion and hatch for standing water, if you find it investigate further.
23 - Anchor windlass?...does it work? they are not cheap to replace.

24 - Watch temp gauge during sea trial ....boat should not overheat at any time....also keep an eye on the oil pressure gauge, My 454 stays between 40 - 60 psi.

This will give you a pretty good Idea of what you are getting into.....Good Luck.

Thanks Quint. I will definetly print this list and take it with me when I go to look. I'm new to sterndrives (my last was a jet) so I'm going to take a freind who knows his stuff with me. Does the price seem right to you?

I had no idea about about much they wieghed. NADA stated like 5800 lbs dry wieght. My expedition will do 9200, so I though I was ok. guess i'll have to look into having someone tow it for me. I plan to leave it in the water during the season.

Your expedition should be ok if you have the big engine and towing package. Avoid hills at all costs

We just bought a 92 270 with 353 hours with trailer for $9500. It was super nice with a new long block last year.

oh and your weight estimate is very good. Our F250 with a 351 pulls ours just fine. It is allergic to mountains though

The 92 270 is lighter than the 290......the list I posted is based on a 290.

AC / DC Question? Is my factory 20 amp battery charger also my Inverter? Where is the Inverter? While on shorepower I have all AC Outlets, sink light, water heater, AC & Stove active but it seems like nothing else. It seems these other items are just running off the 12 volt batteries. I'm also not getting any amp readings on my battery charger meter?....Mike.

Your battery charger is also called a "converter". It converts AC to DC. An inverter changes DC to AC. You don't have an inverter on your boat.
Don't know about an amp meter, my original charger is long gone.

Thanks JerryS.....what did you replace the factory converter/battery charger with? I guess I should check if a fuse in the unit is blown also. Thanks, Mike.

Got a question guys, I have a 92 290 with a 7.4 engine in it. At the end of last season I could only get the boat to get up to about 4100 rpm WOT and about 34 - 35 miles per hour (GPS). I mentioned this to MM and over the winter they re-built the carb and this season I am still only getting around 4100- 4200 rpm at WOT. I normally cruise at around 3200 which gets me about 27-29 mph on the GPS, which is really fine, so I rarely ever try to go WOT. But when I do I am only able to get the 4100 or so. It seems that the difference between the 3200 and 4100 only gets me about 5 or 6 miles per hour overal difference. It runs great no misses or anything, smooth as silk, just wont get above that 4100 mark, no matter what I do with the trim. It has new plugs, the prop was sent out and tuned. It feels really strong running in that 3200 - 3600 or so range but when you get about that it just seems to not have the pep. I just cannot figure out why I cannot get any more out of it. Mind you, I am really happy at my 3200 because it is very fuel efficient, but would like it to get up to where it should be at WOT. I have had the boat about 8 years now and to be honest with you I spend so much time running at cruising speed I have sort of forgotten what it will do at WOT. But the books say it should have more that it has. I would also think that when I open it up I should feel or hear some sort of a change in the carb. Nothing really happens. I just put the stick forward all the way and it slowly climbs to the 4100 or so. Any thoughts what I might look at. Thanks.

Thanks JerryS.....what did you replace the factory converter/battery charger with? I guess I should check if a fuse in the unit is blown also. Thanks, Mike.

My original charger got hit by lightning about 5 yrs. ago. I replaced it with a Charles C charger, 2 stage charger. ( ie: 2 stages-2 batteries to charge - I think :smt101).

Anyhow, it crapped out this year. The second stage was overcharging my house battery and releasing a lot of hydrogen fumes which were setting off my CO alarm. This was happening when the boat had the cockpit cover on it. So, anyhow, I have pulled the fuse for stage 2 and let the charger put a charge into both batteries by leaving the battery switch on "both". That is until I decide what kind of charger I want to buy.

I'm thinking about upgrading the radio/audio, so, I will probably need more juice. I have put in a SiriusXM antenna and want to put in a new head unit, 6.5 inch co-axial speakers and a 400W amplifier. Probably not put a sub-woofer in at this time. So, I am considering going to AGM batteries and will need a charger that is selectable for different battery types.

If you are also thinking about a better sound system, it will probably affect what kind of charger you want to get.

Maybe Dave, Quint4, will pop in here and have something to say about chargers. He has already put more "noise" making equipement in his boat.

I have a dual bank "Guest" smart charger the PO put in the boat. It is great as it never overcharges or "cooks" the batteries and is made for marine applications.

Scott W. ......I can not plane my 290 below 3500 rpm which gets me 21 MPH (GPS). How in the world are you getting those numbers? By the way I have new everthing...carb, plugs, wires, fuel pump, coil, ignition sensor,....you name it.

As far as your WOT here is a check list to contemplate:

1. Fuel condition. Type and Octane possibly old fuel
.
2. Propeller pitch or diameter, damaged blades.

3. Restricted fuel pickup tube or anti siphon valve.
4. Crankcase oil volume, high oil level can cause aerated oil and lifter collapse.

5. Marine growth on hull and outdrive.

6. Wrong gear ratio in outdrive.

7. Restricted carburetor air intake (clogged flame arrestor?).

8. Restricted exhaust system (broken exhaust shutters/flappers) in engine transom shield or drive.

9. Poor cylinder compression ...do a compression test.

10. Carburetor defective, or wrong type.

11.Problem with Fuel pump pressure and vacuum

12. Boat overloaded, improperly loaded, or improperly trimmed.

13. Engine Overheating

14. Engine timing or ignition system problem.
15. Remote control cables and linkage for proper travel to open throttle plates fully.
16. Spark plugs fouled?

I usually run at 3500 to 3600 rpm which gives me 27-29 mph by GPS.

Perhaps it is my tac that is off, I will have to check it. If everyone else is running at different numbers. But as I recall she has run about at the same place since I owned her. I did change all of the instruments a few years ago and they seemed to turn the same as the prior ones. I will double check the tac numbers however. I am still only getting about 34-35 MPH WOT, is that about what everyone else is getting with these boats?

Scott W.

21 mph at 3500? Good grief, Dave, what are you dragging, a sea anchor? What is your top end?
Scott, 34-35 sounds about right. I really don't know as I haven't ever run it wide open.
I had a 20' Formula that would hit about 50 and I did like to crank it up, but, not the sluggish old cruiser. All that I get from it when I press on it too hard is a big sucking sound coming from the gas tank :smt001
I have to say that it seems like I used to get into the 27-29 mph range with fewer rpm several years ago. I have changed the plugs recently, but, it could probably use new wires, etc. I would be thrilled to get 27 at 3200.

I get 32 MPH at around 4500 rpm WOT. I have a generator & A/C. My tach has been verified with a timing gun to be accurate. Maybe there are some gold bars hidden in my bilge.
