I have a 2006 Sea Ray 290. Anyone know the make and model of the compass that is installed in my boat? (Boat is currently in storage, and was looking for a replacement at next week's Nautical Flea Market at Dania).

The Sea Ray parts manual only says "Compass, Flush Mount, 4 3/16" BLK W/CONN"

Mine is in storage too...BUT...My prior Sea Ray had the factory compass that cracked from the cold. I called the Mfr. and they sent me a new one, no charge. It was 3 years old @ the time.

Why replace it when the replacement cost is usually several time more than the cost to remanufacture it?

I recently discovered that Ritchie has a rebuild program that is very cost effective. I had mine rebuilt for $90 and the cost of a new one was $300. Ritchie doesn't just shine up the old one and send it back either. They replace the card, dome, lighting, wiring, as well as checking and adjusting the accuracy.........you literally cannot tell a rebuilt one from a new one.

I was hoping to pick up a good used or new one for less than $50. I am guessing that my compass is smaller than yours (ok....no jokes about the size of my compass - I am very self conscious).

Go for the rebuild, it's like new when you get it back. The Ritchie web site directed me to a local service center, cost $75.00 about 4 years ago.

I just got my 2003 340 last Sept. Needless to say with the short summer we had and brutal winter we only got to use her 2 times.

Is the compass supposed to light up at night? When I hit the compass light switch on the dash there is not light. Just thought perhaps mine did not have that option as there are switches on the dash that do not apply to my model/year.

If it is supposed to have a light is there an easy bulb replacement or do I have to send the entire unit in for repair?

Thanks

By compass light, you mean the switch marked 'comp'? On our 280 that switch does not light up the compass, but does do a fine job of turning the light on that is in the compartment under the wet bar.

The compass light should be wired into the navigation light circuit.

RITCHIE ! Is there any other at such price and quality?

This past summer my flush mount ritchie compas started losing fluid. I looked in to a replacement and found it to be around $190. I googled Ritchie Navigation and found out about there rebuild program. For $80 and the cost of shipping it to them it sounded like the way to go. I received it the other day and when i pulled it from the box all i could say was "WOW". It looks like they grabbed a bran-new one off the shelf. I am very impressed with Ritchie.

They're one of my customers, really nice people too.

I need to replace my compass on my 2003 280DA. Currently, there is a GPS mounted in this location; the previous owner removed the compass and I didn't get it with the sale.

Does anyone know the model number I need to purchase a replacement for my 280?

Thanks,

WOW - I can't believe someone would remove a compass from a boat
