Chesapeake Bay Destinations

Maybe we need to organize a Chesapeake Bay CSR Rendevous?

Greg,

I think you're referring to BIH Rendezvous, which is another CSR tradition?

If AC will be on July 8th (2nd week of July, as Dom said), then this might work out just perfect.

I'd like to mention one important point. As far as I recall, Chesapeake Bay area is known for having a problem with jelly fish. I know a good way how to avoid them in BB area, but if CB is full of the jellies that might spoil the trip to some degree. So, you'd need to find spots where there're very few jellies, which most likelly be closer to the ocean's colder and saltier water. I hope that some local folks can chime in with some details on this.

Oh, yeah. Forgot about that. What is the 2011 date?

I missed that post, is there an Atlantic City CSR 2011 post?

This is why CSR is so valuable to me... Thanks. Hadn't even considered that.

I haven't seen anything official yet, so just going by a preliminary rumor. Last year we had it opened in mid or closer to the end of Jan. When I had it opened the first year in the begining of Jan people thought i was creazy planning a July get together in Jan.

Anyway, let's give a bit more time and we'll have a thread going.

On BIH, I think we need to ask Skip, Tim or Gary. As I recall correctly, they were behind organizing it.

Something "official" will be forthcoming on AC 2011 shortly. There is some posturing necessary with the good folks at Trump. They have a Bertram group and a go-fast Poker Run group, both in July that might be better avoided.

Stand-by for more details.

Did anyone do a BIH (Baltimore Inner Harbor) last year?

I can help on the jellies... There are far fewer jellies north of the bridge than there are south of it. In July and August the Severn is loaded with them, but up near Middle River / Hart Miller there will be very few. if any.

The amount of rain seems to make a difference. If we don't get much rain, the jellies make it further north. If we get a normal amount of rain, we don't see any.

I don't ever recall seeing any in Fairlee Creek.

Jelly Fish. Some call them Sea Nettles, I've called them other names.
There seems to be no problem with them at swimming areas from Fairlee Creek and north. If you anchor in the rivers and creeks there will be no problem with the jellys.
The best thing about the upper bay is standing in the water behind the boat; with a snack tray and cold beer on the swim platform.

Our home marina is right across the Patuxent River for Solomons, and from here we've cruised as far north as Baltimore and as far south as Norfolk.

An aside, I have the Chesapeake Bay magazine guidebook, and it's ok. A better guide is the Dozier's book:

http://www.waterwayguide.com/editions.php?area=chesapeake_bay_2011

Also the Active Captain website:

https://www.activecaptain.com/index.php

Coming up from the south, I can recommend Hampton, VA (Bluewater Marina), Cape Charles, VA (Bay Creek Marina), Deltaville, VA (Regatta Point Marina) and of course Solomons, MD. If you are willing to take a 15 or so mile side trip up the Potomac prior to getting to Solomons, Kinsale, VA (Port Kinsale Marina) is one of our favorite destinations on the Bay.

From Solomons heading North, Herrington Harbor South or Tilghman Island - HHS is a "resort Marina, Tillghman Island (Knapps Narrows Marina) is more laid back, so it depends on what you are looking for. We prefer Oxford, MD to St. Michael's - in Oxford we stay at Mear's Point Marina. Annapolis is a must stop, from there Rock Hall is a short ride - we stayed at the Sailing Emporium and it is a nice place but not close to the town unless you have a dingy. From there the Baltimore Inner Harbor.

Bush River. Is that near Aberdeen Proving Ground? Is there anything to see there or is it all off-limits?

Maybe we need to organize a Chesapeake Bay CSR Rendevous?

The Bush River is near Edgewood Md., which is the old Arsnal. Now it is apart and in name of APG. The BR is nice. If you are looking for a place to hang out then Dove's Cove is nice. Under the train bridge will take you to three marina's. However, I think two of them are semi-private. My FIL belongs to the Bush River Yacht club. We go there to eat ok and drink.
However, on the other side of the bay is Fairlee, Still Pond and Warton Beach. All good. More activity at Fairlee and depending on which weekend it can be quite interesting. We go to Still Pond a lot. Mainly just to hang out with our fellow boaters.
North of them is Havre de Grace. Stay out of the flats. But a must visit. Go up the Northeast River to Charlestown marina. Good resturants and the area is quite nice to include the trip.
BIH - if you haven't been make sure you go. Several good marinas, like the BIH East very good with floating piers.
Hope that answers your question.

If you do stop in Fairlee Cr.(great oak landing marina) be sure to stop and say hi. Im on E-DOCK 217. Cold ones waiting...... Marinas open 7 days.... resturant and beach bar Fri. - sun. last year. A fun place with friendly people. And hell I'm there ... what more could anyone want..... C you soon....lol

Cantlers(sp) near Annapolis... You go by boat... There is a place in St. Michaels a Restaurant near the Mueseum...
Is that the Crab Claw? Good place on the water and cash only.

I'm new to boating on the Chesapeake, but I'm wondering why nobody has mentioned Smith Island yet? That's one of the destinations we're planning on this Summer.

Chesapeake Beach has a nice water park if you've got kiddies and a spa for the wife...never been there by boat though.

CAPT Pete,
I have seen your boat at Fairlee and on the water. Nice boat.

Ehh.. If you go there recommend bringing your own lunch. A group of us took a cat ride over there from chrisfields one year (labor day weekend) and many if us got really sick. Can't remember the name of the restaurant, but it's right accross from the little museum they have there. Also watch your water depth (take it slow) when you get close to the island.

We are moving to Havre De Grace this year, but if you get the chance, the Nauti-Goose is a great place for a Crabcake sandwich!

Spent 3 years on Fairlee Creek, F-dock....a real party. Warton Creek is a pleasant departure from a busy Great Oaks (Fairlee Creek). Still Pond is great for rafting with friends. Also, Fairlee Creek can be tricky getting in.

Skinny water up there at Havre De Grace. Boat with care. Remember the cost of a boat slip and waterfront property is usually determined by it's location and usability. Sometimes it's cheaper to drive your vehicle a little further so that your boat doesn't have to travel so far to the fun and action. Just my 2 cents worth.

Bought our girl instead of going on a honeymoon... looking for some nice coves on the Eastern Bay... 3.5 ft clearance a must! Any ideas?
