Windlass motor decides to commit suicide this weekend. Not generally a big problem as I troubleshot it and found the motor was bad.
Previous posts send us to Imtra which I went. Original posters said very nice people to work with. I now understand why they are so nice as they are charging me $ 1,500.00 for a seal kit and motor that are probably worth 300.00.
I am not one to complain to much but this is ridiculus. I have half a mind to trash the Lofrans and go with someone who has more realistic parts pricing.

Don't blame you. I probably would too...

Have you tried a local shop that rebuilds motors? I have no experience with windlasses, but it would be worth a shot perhaps.

We want to help you get your Lofrans back in full working condition. Please contact me at jim@imtra.com or by phone at 508-995-7000 so we can work out a solution to your problems.

Jack,

I am surprised, Lofrans has been very helpful to many posters including myself.....but, as you mentioned, not with a major repair/replacement of the motor. Maybe Jim T can help. Let use know how things work out.

Jim,
I appreciate the post. My problems ARE worked out. Just to the tune of 1400.00 bucks lighter on my side.
My complaint is I paid that much for a motor. That motor at best should have been 500.00. And that's with a decent markup.
Once again because it's on a boat let's gouge em.
I do under stand that a motor that's used in a marine environment has certain extra needs than lets say a car or machine. 100.00 bucks should take care of those needs.
$1,400.00 for that motor ridiculus.

I can buy a new Lewmar windlass for that price... and have lots of change left over...

Here's an alternative, make sure Nick goes with us and he can be the windless.

Seriously, I can't believe what they are charging for that motor. Can it be re-built?

No way to have rebuilt it. It was corrosion that got it. It was eaten up to bad. An obvious reason to ALWAYS wash out your rode locker after every use.

Crap, I never wash out mine. Now I'm afraid to look at my windlass. Although I do (usually) rinse the chain and anchor as it is coming up.
We often anchor in mud, so it gets pretty ugly otherwise.

Greg,
You gotta wash it out. Just a good maintenance procedure. I have always washed mine out. I assume my problem arose from the previous owner. Oh well all fixed now.
