I replace my Surflo water pump last year and it worked just fine. But this year it cycles every few minutes lasting a few seconds. Also the pump turns on immediatley with the cold water but there a a delay with the hot water.

I looked for leaks but therea are none I can see. But there is a bubble of air in the clear filter next to the pump.

I noticed in my manual that there is a pressure holding device, I think is is above the water tank, it isbrass and about 3inches long with an adjustment screw. What does this device do.

thanks for any help.

Sounds to me like you just have air in the system after the pump. Try opening each faucet on at a time and letting it run for 1-2 minutes. If you have air, it will purge from one of the faucets.

Also, I answered this one last week...I think it was....and the thread had lots of discussion on it. You may want to search for it.

Thanks for the heads up. I have tried that and still there is a pressure leak.

When the pump is running have you looked at the clear filter to see if it's getting air in the system as it runs?

I can see a small bubble of air that is trapped in the filter. It doesn't look like it moves or gets bigger.

I had a similar problem when de-winterizing our RV (a 26' Holiday Rambler) this past spring ... no matter what I tried the ShurFlo 5.7 VSD pump wouldn't fully prime. It pushed water through the system but was drawing air from someplace and just wouldn't settle down to its normally very smooth operation. It was obviously cavitating and working a lot harder than it needed to.

After checking and tightening all the usual hose clamps I took a closer look at the Monster strainer on the inlet side of the pump and found a hairline crack near where the clear cover meets the black plastic - it was letting air into the system and leaking water ever so slightly. I temporarily took the strainer out of the loop and verified that was the source of the problem. $18 and a new strainer later we were in business.

Best I can tell it was freeze damage from when the rig was in storage during our last winter living in Park City UT (-24 deg F!); hopefully now that we're back in Virginia that kind of problem should be behind us ...

Good luck!

I had a similar problem this spring. I traced it to the pressure regulation valve built into the "city water" hose connection in the stern locker. There was vsible leakage coming from the fitting. A tap with the hammer handle caused the reg valve to seat, and the problem went away. Not sure if everyone has one of these connections, as I'm led to believe it's an option, but it is important to winterize this connection every fall.

Good luck!

look for small water leaks, also open clear water strainer clean o-ring and put it together (lot of times pump "sucks" air on that o-ring).
there maybe a leaks on faucets, transom shower, water heater and they maybe difficult to find when they are small.
if your pump has adjustment screw on top you may try to lower "shut down" pressure and this may also stop leak.
regulator tank is a device to hold system pressurized and prevent from water go on "trickle" when pumps turns on and off

Thanks,

I adjusted the screw and checked for leaks everywhere. I wrote to Shurflo and they think it is a defective pressure switch and are going to send me a replacement part to try.
