16 Year Old Girl Begins 'Round The World Cruise

yes another Ozzie..

Without reading the article she did a test run and ran into a container ship the first night

Authorities weren't happy, questioning her experience. Oh well they repaired all the damage
then they made her do a test run down to Sydney from Brisbane..she made it so now she is off

Is it just me? No way I would let my 16 year old daughter do this, especially a pretty, will make the headline news type. I wish her well, and a safe passage, but I am pretty sure there are pirates who think she is the next big ticket item.

Her planned track will keep her well south of the pirates operating from the coast of Kenya north to the Gulf of Aden. From what I've read, she plans to go south of both Cape Horn and Cape of Good Hope; for someone departing from and returning to Australia or New Zealand, this is by far the shortest route.

Her challenge will most likely be nature, rather than man: the Roaring Forties.

imagine having the self-confidence to take that on at 16. must be a pretty special girl, regardless of family background/grooming. i wish her well. there are lots of things i could have gone for in my life that i never did - always considered the risks rather than the benefits. coulda been my upbringing, i suppose, but i kinda believe that sometimes "special" people just arrive. God will protect her.

PS Hope she's packing! (as you yankees like to say...) woops! there i go again, upsetting all those nice southern folks!

This is becoming ridiculous!!! It all seems quite the in-thing fad to become the youngest especially with sailing. I'm sorry, but it seems a little odd to me that her parents would even allow this? If you take away the publicity and the possibility of breaking a record, would the parents still allow her to go? There are certainly more noble, challenging, and rewarding character-building pursuits out there to occupy a teenagers time.

Although, if successful, this will be a stir and no doubt will build her character.... but at what potential cost?... Obviously the inevitable afterbirth will be some 15-year old's time to step up with the help of their very affluent parents.

well, the glass can be half-full or it can be half-empty - just a difference in perception.

No way would I agree to let my 16yr old attempt anything this dangerous just to set a record, the risks out way the reward. Child abuse??

You're 100% right... if she had been ugly it would have been fine.:lol:

Sorry... only kidding... couldn't resist.

It reminds me of this.

When this happened I remember thinking WTF were the parents thinking.

she was 7.
the boat girl is 16.

where i come from at 16 you can drink, have sex, marry, see the worst movies (oh, but not buy tobacco, drive or vote). I see where you guys are coming from and another time i might agree with you.

other 16 year olds are out hanging with their friends, maybe driving crazy, maybe in gangs - lots of different persuits that could see them end up dead.

you can join the british army at 16 and you can die fighting in afghanistan at 18 for the same army

sail the fucking world, why dont you :smt038

I've got to ask !!. How much food is she carrying for a 6 to 9 month trip ??. And where in the heck is it stored .

I understand the age difference; Jessica also had her farther and flight instructor with her and look how that turned out.
I have a 16 yr old daughter and she seems very mature for her age compared to her friends, but there are times when she shows that she is only 16.

Part of the story mentioned a 13 year old placed into protective custody by the Dutch when her parents were going to let her try the same thing. I have a 13y.o. and no way...let alone 16. Hell, I may not even let her be out past midnight at 16 let alone sail the world:grin:!

I would send my 14-year old son... and drill a hole in the bottom of the boat right before I shoved it off from the shore.

keep her locked up Jack! my daughters are now 31 and 30 - you should hear the dinner table stories they tell me now about how they got round my curfew rules! you wouldnt believe it! I can laugh now but i woulda tanned their backsides had i known at the time. i even remember how the youngest one didnt want to wake up on saturday mornings - little did i know that once we were all asleep she was exiting the window from her room and taking a taxi into town to meet her friends. jesus, i freak a little even now, 14 years later.

Yeah like we didn't do that sh*t to our parents too.. Pay back a b*tch. :smt043
