Need help on picking a cruiser?

Why by new when you can pick up slightly used and already outfitted at great prices right now. Even brand new boats have bugs to be worked out and problems to be fixed.

I agree completely! Unless you are stinking rich (in which case I need capital for my business), you should buy used right now for your first boat. If you like it, you'll want to trade up. You'll lose less since you spend less. There are a lot of really nice boats out there going for low prices. Especially now as the season winds down. Don't be afraid to spend some time and travel to find that perfect boat. $150K buys WAY more in a used boat than new.

You need to go with what you are comfortable with but my very first boat was a 1986 270 Sundancer. She had twin engines with I/O's. Although nervous at first, I had no trouble learning how to handle her. I too had only rented small boats but not even as much as you have. If you use good sense (i.e weather and waterways) until you gain some experience with it, I say you'll do fine with a 27 to 29 dancer.

Our third boat (second one does not count - not a Sea Ray) was a 330 Sundancer. That was a very different feel to the 27. Although 33 to 36 would b a beter choice for going up and down the coast, I would recommend 27-29 for the first one. Good luck!

Finding used boats in the LA area has been a bit daunting, in General, what are the average depreciation as well?

Are you using www.yachtworld.com ?

I just did a quick query on Sea Rays from 2000 to 2009, in the 26 to 34 foot range and received several hits. I put in pricing from $100K to $175K, figuring there is room to negotiate.

Where are you located in LA?

Thanks, found a few good ones I might check out, I live in west LA about 15~20 from MDR, Venice Beach.

There are plenty of boats in our area (Channel Islands down to San Diego) where you can pick up a good deal right now. I'm at Pier 44 Marina, slip 1809. Feel free to stop by for a beer if you are in the area or have any questions.
