Hi, Some Marina worker measured our boat, so of course they raised our rent. They are telling us that it measures 38'.
The survey we have says that the boat is 33'7", and length with the standard platform is 35' 11".

I'm sure they are doing the measuring at the Marina from the tip of the anchor to the tip of the platform.

Does this sound correct? Were really unhappy with this group. I would think that the survey would help if we took it in and showed them, but were not sure.

Thanks!

i have been at marinas that measure form tip of bow rail to back of swim platform and ones that use the registered length
in our case reg length is 23' and bow rail to back of swim platform is 24'8".

it is what it is. overall is the true space your taking up.

I think they are all starting to pick all the revenue they can now. I just got the shaft because of overhang. Got put in a 40 from a 35. An extra $100/mo.

They obviously know what they're doing. They won't be impressed by the survey, but like he said, what do you have to lose?

Your first step should be to read your contract to find out how they are supposed to charge. Second, get a tape measure and measure for yourself. Then decide if you are up to a fight.

My guesses are that the contract says your are charged by length measured from the fartest forward to the farthest aft part of the boat including all gear and attachments. The surveyor just pulled the length off the spec. sheet, registration or decumentation and is probably the hull LOA as defined by the coast guard. The 35'11" number is probably from Sea Ray and may not include your swim platform.

If marina space is that hard to find, it's up to the language in the contract. FWIW, here in Mississippi (3 marinas), and the marinas I've been in Tennessee (2), they could care less how big your boat is. They rent the slip by the size of the slip. You can put a 20' boat in a 40' slip, or a 40' boat in a 35' slip.

I understand you questioning it and maybe a little frustrated about their measurement, though if the contract states then they can do. I typically do not like to make waves as it relates to boating for it always seems to have a trickledown effect. I guess they could give you a break there and then adjust the fee of doing some work on your boat latter down the road.
If it is large sums of money look at your options closely, and then react though with full information in hand (knowledge).

Consider yourself lucky. In my area all marinas are charging by slip size, not boat size. No more arguing about a boat's actual length. Wanna put a 30' boat in a 40' slip? go right ahead. Pay for 40'. Have a nice day.

Same way around us...

+1...Think it through!

Let about 3 ft of anchor line out and re-measure..........seem like I remember the '88 340 pulpit is mounted on top of the deck, which means your anchor is sticking out about a foot.

It's funny how our boats have 2 sizes... one for marinas and one for everyone else....:smt043 Mine is 27ft for the marinas and the specs say 29'11" for everyone else ..... like other things it depends on how you measure it!

When I am a transient I am always 48 feet. Hard to say 45 when it says four eighty on the side. On the Great Lakes I have never been charged for more than that. My marina has 45' slips and 65' slips, unfortunately, at about 52 LOA there is no way I can squeeze into the 45' so I end up paying an additional $1,600 each year for the bigger slip. Of course the heated storage facility breaks out the tape measure!

I would suggest taking your own measurement and if they are off, let them know. In today's economy I am sure they do not want to lose a customer over a foot.

That's how it's done at my marina too. And I'm the 30 footer in a 40' slip :)

When I am trying to pay for transient moorage it's "see there on the boat it says 450 so that means 45 footer" when it is maneuvering in tight spots it's 57' LOA......

The problem arises when they stick me in 45' spot and I have 12' hanging out into the channel. Also when they have the long dock with side tie linear moorage spots and that's when they have come down to the boat with the tape measure and have asked to come back to the marina office get my visa out again....

Plus

With mid 90s' SR this additional revenue can be significant.

Cruiser,

You don't say where in Sacramento you have the boat and you don't say what you are paying.

I live in Elk Grove (14 miles south of Sacto) and we keep our boat at Oxbow Marina near Isleton. www.oxbowmarina.com It takes us 40 minutes to get there, it's quiter than anything in Sac and you are more in the middle of the Delta and don't have that long boat ride down from Sacto. We are only 3 hours and 15 minutes from Sausalito.

I have an '89 340 Sundancer. Our boat is in a 36' covered slip and we pay $355/month + electric. (about 10 bucks) There are about 6 mid 80's 340's in the shed.

There are openings on our shed and they have a couple of specials going on right now. You might want to check it out.
