Just before midnight the space shuttle launched off. I watched it from the back yard. With my telescope I could see the external tanks fall off as the shuttle climbed into the sky. It is now just a bright star in the night sky.

I suspect that folks in titusville had a great show tonight.

BTW, it's really impressive since I'm 171 miles from the launch pad.

Very cool.

At 11:30, I was planning on watching the launch on CNN.com, to see it live. I opened it up and thought it was gonna be sick. I closed out and thought I'd reopen at 11:55. Oops, its 12:43. Damn it. Haha

I watched it to from my yard- since it was a clear night you could see it very clearly and I am about 95 miles from the launch pad. Very cool.

Did you know that the next scheduled launch from launch complex 39 is not a shuttle? It is this enourmous beast I have been working on the past three years:

http://blogs.nasa.gov/cm/blog/Ares I-X/

Its the first new vehicle to be stacked in the VAB in over 34 years. Over 320 feet tall - twice the height of a shuttle stack.

Go Ares I-X!

Very Neat! Thanks for the pointer!

It will be very interesting to see if Congress maintains funding for NASA and Ares in light of our huge deficits stretching decades into the future. There are so many positive arguments in favor of space research yielding technoligies that improve our productivity and quality of life here on earth, but Congress has always had a hard time thinking past the next election cycle.

Certainly the space program ranks relatively low on most citizens' priority lists.
