The rage this inspires in me is astronomical. They were suffering in a seven bedroom, five bath with a pool. OMG!!!! They really needed that help. How many tax dollars paid for the pool to be cleaned????

Sad, just sad what's going on today. Not Bush years, TODAY DAMIT!!! I'm not sure if a country, no matter how bold or proud can survive these ideologies long..

I'm speechless....

So let me get this straight. By me living in a 4 bedroom home that I can afford, I can keep paying all the taxes that I do so some of those taxes can go to help a family of 4 (smaller then our family) live in a 7 bedroom house (more than ours) that they cannot afford on their own.

We are not talking about helping the very needy meet their basic needs of food clothing and shelter here, we are helping a family of 4 stay in a 7 bedroom house.

Hey, that’s great!

The issue with this ideology is as more and more people become aid recipients and less pay in the system will eventually collapse like a pyramid scheme.

Given the current debt and future obligations I’m wondering if it no longer matters. At some point there is no way to avoid systemic collapse. I’m not sure if we are close or if that line has already been crossed.

And the news story is written as if this is a wonderful thing happening for this poor unfortunate family who didn't know how to read the fine print.

You got to love this

"HomeFree-USA is a nonprofit organization devoted to homeownership development and financial empowerment. It's one of several national nonprofit organizations that offer mortgage assistance and home ownership counseling. The Neighborhood Assistance Corp. of America and the National Urban League offer community advocacy programs geared toward counseling lower- and middle-income families who are purchasing or refinancing their homes."

HomeFree. good name.

I was afraid to click the link..... WHY did I click it!!!!! CURSE you beachcomber!!!

Well I am glad that I, my wife and our three children helped them out with our tax payments!!! Because we did not choose to pursue the "American Dream" and live with in our means in our modest home and continued to save.....

The couple did have a legit medical hardship no doubt. From the article they have managed to hold onto their property through this hardship and then some. I would hope that the hardship would not last 5 years!

Its a shame that the family in the story only has a low interest 5 year loan on the property. They are back in the same situation again where the loan will re-adjust in 5 years... They orginally thought they would get out of the orginal loan in that time but did not, so will their situation be different in 5 years??? But by then the whitehouse will change and there won't be any blame there...

HomeFree = Low/middle income families , Low/middle income families="vacant rental properties" why in the world..... That one there irks me..

I am getting tired of "taking one for America"... Its hard to stay positive...

If you really want to get up set just wait until you start hearing about the zero down mortgages the government is still doing. It stuff like that that got us into this problem to start with. With no skin in the game it makes it real easy to walk away.

I haven't used a bumper sticker for over 20 years... Just bought one and proudly display it on my Explorer
"So, how's that "hope" and "change" thing going for you?"

j

"Griffin says people of color have become "easy prey" because they often don't know the right questions to ask about subprime and ARM loans.."

Hmmm... Is it just me, or does anyone else read this line as "minorities are stupid"?

Why aren't they pissed that these folks managed to graduate high school (I assume, since they are with the police and fire dept.) and can't read and understand a basic loan document?

The system set them up for failure to start with, and it looks like it will be setting them up for failure again...

I don't want to dismiss the personal accountabilty (how did a firefighter and policeman think they could qualify for a house like this on their incomes?), but shame on the reckless mortgage lenders for qualifying them and lending them the money in the first place. In this case the lender (GMAC) is taking gov't TARP money to avoid bankruptcy! Unbelievable!

:smt021 Why do I pay bills on time? Why do I live within my means? WTF is wrong with my wife and I and most (if not all ) of you?

I focking HATE handouts, and this is one.

F this chit. Im selling my house and moving to Beverly Hills, thats where I want to go...gimme gimme. Then Ill cry poor and get a handout...woohoo!

See ya suckers! Im going to rape the government for all I can while the getting is good. I always wanted a rolls royce.

And the media spins it as a good thing that people are getting something for nothing. What happened to hard work?

It takes a lot of hard work to get someone else to pay your bills. Just looks at all of the ACORN spinoffs needed to guide people through the process.

It's just like going through grade school. Remember the people that cheated all the time? They put more work into cheating than studying, and then at the end of the day everyone said they screwed themselves. Now we're letting them have the upperhand again. Instead of pointing out that they are stupid, and that's why they are "poor" or "underprivileged", we give them handouts and pretend it's not their own fault that they're stupid.

I don't know why people are so afraid to stand up and say it, screw politically correct, YOU PEOPLE ARE STUPID!!!

and my favorite quote
"After discussing their financials with a mortgage broker, the family was presented with a deal and payments they could afford. The interest-only, adjustable rate loan sounded good at the time. And since they were not first-time homebuyers, they thought they knew what they were getting into. Terese Hicks figured they could always refinance before the interest rates were adjusted."

Yeah, interest only... there's a smart move!

I think a flat tax is more than fair. What I really think we should do is run the country like a country club. Everyone pays dues. Call it $8,000 per person. I will gladly pay my dues to live in this country. Everyone who can't pay dues, go away and save up. I am tired of paying the dues of several people, in reality that's what those of us who are at least mildly successful are doing.

Yeah, interest only... there's a smart move!

+1. They thought they were smart because it sounded good at the time and they were not your ordinary everyday fools, to quote Clark Grizwold, because they were not first time home buyers and they could just refinance if the rates went up.

Idiots! They were both on fixed incomes. Did they think that the town was going to start doing double digit percent raises for the first time in history vs. a salary freeze or lay-off? How were they going to afford the payment with a refi? If that was their plan, why not lock in now at historically low rates on a 30 year fixed?

Despite not getting my boat loan for the 36DB, I'm glad the banks started using the stupid filter.

I think CNN should do a story on my sad family sitting in front of our 290 crying about how we couldn't get our new sedan bridge.

I'm going to skip the 420 and move on up to a 480, sell the house, hide the money, live aboard, stop making payments, and then whine. Who's with me?
