I need to know if my engine is a standard or reverse rotation. I have a 1996 210 Signature with the 5.7 LX EFI with an Aplha I gen II out drive. My motor is bad and I am exploring my options on replacing but I don't know which one I need to look at getting so i don't end up with the wrong one. Thanks

They are standard, the counter rotating is done with the port drive.

I was under the impression that all engines these days are Left Hand (is that standard or reverse??). If you are looking at the front of the engine (where the main pulley is spinning) if everything spins to the right (clockwise) you have a LH engine.

In twin engine boats, rotation of the prop is reversed on one engine in the drive (for I/O) or the transmission (for IB)

I thought it was standard, but thought I would ask and do some research before i made a mistake and bought the wrong one. Thanks a lot guys

Ron,

I hate to even admit I know this, but I have a blown up motor that is reverse rotation. On the factory engine cover, it lists the merc serial number and adds "opp" for reverse/opposite rotation. You are correct in that most motors with an "opp" stamp are for the port motor on a twin engine boat.
If the OP has a single engine boat it should be normal (LH) rotation unless the serial number indicates otherwise. Also in my search for a new reverse rotation motor, I have been told that after 1997 for 5.7l motors, they are all the same rotation only the drive changes direction. This is best info as I've been told. I hope no one even needs to go here. But, I'm thankfull I don't have diesels with my BS. See other posts... DS

Sorry to dispute you Ron but my boat has counter-rotating engines. Are you sure your boat is not the same?

Manufacturers did away with counter rotating engines years ago. It's cheaper to build better transmission that can run either direction than to swap crankshafts, camshafts, starters, and reprogram engine control processors to make the engines run the wrong way.

My engines are opposite rotation....but builders are getting away from the counter rotation as was said before because of the ease of a transmission modification. In the case of the B/W transmissions I think we are stuck with the rotation. I am told that the Hurth and ZF units will go either way simply by flipping the transmission which make much more sense than screwing around with the internals of an engine to run it backwards. I think it's basically a cam shaft change.

Mercury Marine completely changed their website, but a few years back, their Parts Express site allowed you to enter the engine SN and it would tell you what you had - displacement, transmission and the rotation. Also had exploded parts diagrams with part numbers for every engine system. Mine came up both both LH. You, me and sprink all have the same engines and I couldn't imagine Merc getting all complex and putting RH and LH engines in the same boat. You guys need to start your engines and see if they spin the same direction. I'd be real interested to know- and since you both boat in warm climates, I expect to hear back from you RIGHT AWAY!

Simply said there a a few NET sites out there that can give you that information. particularly www.sterndrives.com . AS many on this topic have expressed, it is common in todays market that you have a RH rotation engine which is the standard. The prop will turn clockwise due to the gearing in your outdrive. Sprink56 noted that trans or drives are sold right or left rotating...that is correct. Now don't quote me on this...cause there is probably some rare remote instance that goes beyond the RULE. :) Happy Boating!!!

outdrive? What's that? Is that like a mobile outhouse?

Ron,

Mine aren't Mercs...they are Marine Power Inc, MPIs. I checked with Marine Power last week about this ethanol business (which is ok with mine) and gave them my serial numbers. My port engine is reverse rotation.

My port engine also runs backwards. I found out for sure last year when changing plug wires. The firing order was backwards. We pulled both distributor caps and cranked the engines. Port is definitly opposite. Kind of like this :smt101 I cannot say for certain but I also thought there was something in the ser# indicating direction.

If she isn's siezed crank her over and see which she turns. Engine rotation left or right is determined by the engine, what I mean is if you are standing behind the engine facing in it's direstion which way is the crank pully turning. Opposite of what it is if facing it from the front. Just like your heart is in your left side of your body. It's the engine's left or right.
Here is the dirrection of a standard 5.7 distributor rotation and firing order.

This should help you.

As info, my flame arrestor cover, rectangular plastic piece that covers top of motor. Indicates the serial number of the engine and for the port motor it says "OPP" after the serial number to indicate opposite rotation. Should be the same on yours?

That is still available, you just have to look for it in a different spot.

Give this guy a call. Walt 360-805-5320.
He has a warehouse full of engines, outdrives, etc.
ParadiseBoatstuff5.jpg

Many of the engines are from the late 90's right up until the last couple of years. Many of these engines are new but have been sitting in this warehouse. You may find a great deal from him.

Good luck

Todd
I've heard it's still there but looked a few times with no luck. PLEASE send me a link!

So you guys with counter-rotating engines have to get a different starter for each engine?

Just give him a call. He has too much stuff to list, but if you tell him what you're looking for he'll look for it and get back to you. I've met him, he's a nice guy and willing to help.

Good luck

I was asking if you had a link to the part of Mercury Parts Express site that allows you to enter your engine SN and get exploded parts diagrams. Luckily, I am currently not in the market for any parts from Sanford & Son's Marine Engine Salvage
