Dog food

Sad to hear about the continuing problems with your dog. I hope you find an effective solution and it's not too expensive.

Like Mike, we don't feed our pets commercial food. Raw ground turkey is the primary ingredient we 'serve', and to that we add raw vegetables, a bit of oatmeal, and in the cold months, we add vegetable oil and peanut butter.

Our pets all live outdoors 100% of the time, and the oldest is a 12-year-old Golden and a similar vintage cat. Both are very healthy. In fact, the cat still brings home full-grown rabbits. She eats half and leaves the rest for us -- at the front door, of course.

I never really looked into it but it costs way too much (it says "Duck and Potato" on it). It's supposed to be easier to digest and produce less dog poop.

We use this too "Natural Balance Duck and Potato"
Pretty expensive. That Dog Whisperer guy uses this stuff.

Dogs do not digest grains very well so we look at the ingredients before we buy - but honestly we don't worry about it too much. Like others - they eat bugs, wood, grass, some sand, tennis balls and anything else unfortunate enough to cross their paths.

They don't digest mink coats very well either. My neighbor's 140 pound german shepard ate the better part of a mink coat that was laying with a bunch of coats on a bed in a guest room during a holiday party. The guest was pretty upset about the coat but the dog developed a bowell obstruction and died.

I have 2 friends that are vets, one a surgeon.

In conversations in the past, BOTH have said the same exact thing: whatever food is the cheapest. All this special diet crap is mostly bs, because more than likely your dog will eat pretty much anything that resembles food outside and inside the house whenever it feels like it anyway.

But I also have sneaking suspicion that the sicker a dog gets, the more $ they make so....

Vet gave me a syringe full of Valium, to use in case she has a seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes or a clusture of seizures back to back. She drew some blood for a blood test, and I should know the results of that tomorrow.

I did tell the vet my plans about switching her food to something preservative free, and about switching her from Heartguard Plus to Interceptor. She said that was a good idea, especially since my dog seems to be sensative to vaccines. I can't believe I didn't remember that, but when she was a puppy she had to be taken back two seperate times because she had an adverse reaction to the vaccine. She's only 16lbs so I'm sure that does have something to do with it...

Purina for our pups. Vet suggested Science Diet, compared the ingredients, same stuff, less expensive.

Eagle Pack Holistic Select. Great food, great ingredients. Our Lab has alot of health issues and this food has been great. Heres the website: Eaglepack.com. You can even call their nutrionist and he will advise you on the best formula for your dog.

BTW, on pet meds, we use to use 1800petmeds to save $$ (4 dogs and one cat, it helped). Our vet finally agreed to match their pricing as they got tired of fielding their phone calls for authorization.

Innova, hands down. Check out the ingredients that will tell the entire story. Best food we have ever purchased for our dogs.

I got the EVO pet which is made by the same makers as Innova...pretty much same ingredients.

We feed our new Golden Canidae dog food. It supposed to be 'all natural'. Our previous Golden died suddenly at only 5 years old while walking down the street. So, my wife thinks this high end food will keep our new pup alive longer.

Well...I'm no Vet..but...seizures are caused by abnormal brain activity. I'm not sure how food affects the brain...but I bet the seizures are just a fact of life for dogs, just like they are a fact of life for people. Dogs are dogs, like four sons said, they eat what they wanna eat.

. . .but just because you want to eat it doesn't mean you should be eating it.

Blood tests came back ok, she's very healthy. We don't know whats causing the seizures, but we will go ahead with the food and heartworm preventative change and see if that has any effect. She had a seizure on the 6th and then on the 17th....so we will see when the next is, if there is one.
