Is there a wothwhile benefit to removing the impellers over the winter non use months? If "yes", how best to store them?

Thanks

I don't know what kind of boat you have, but impellers do the same thing if they sit awhile... they conform to the shape of the water pump. Here's a water pump I just bought (brand new) and the impeller was installed at the factory:

The problem is that the fins hold the shape and the ones that are crammed against the cam don't spring back and so they might as well be missing...

I replace mine every year... I don't winterize and use my boat year round but if I did winterize, I would just replace the impellers in the spring instead of pulling them in the fall and trying to reuse them. No way in hell I would put an old impeller back in a water pump after going through the trouble of pulling it out.

My 2 cents.

Words of wisdom - Do what Gary said. You don't have to replace them every year, but if you do, they'll probably never give you any trouble whatsoever. What kind of boat? Drive? Transmission? Engines?

No.
The cost isn't much compared to the labor of removing them.
So, just replace in the spring and have the confidence of knowing there new.
Keep spares aboard anyway..just in case.

$265 sounds about right, but when you consider that about $34 of that is hardware and the rest is labor, I have to ask whats an afternoon worth to you. is it worth $230, if yest or less then do it yourself and learn a bit about your boat.

I posted a step by step process on swapping the impeller out of a 5.0 about a year ago. it reall is worth doing it you're self.

Thanks Tom ... if it were just the afternoon it would be no questions at all and I would do it myself. I do all maintenance that I possibly can myslef. It is a simple job and I have done these pumps many times on other boats where I can get to them. But this is a 340DA and the pumps are down there inside the stringers. The marina has a 5.5 foot tall guy that can even exchange dripless seals without removing and engine on this model. I looked at the pumps and I have no clue how to get my 6'6" and 220 lbs. body even close enough to them to do the work. So its more about physically being able to do it rather than the drive and knowledge how to do them.
