New to the Westerbeke diesel generator - is this as loud as it should be?

I'm at the boat wanting to replace the inline fuel filter. I can't find it, seems pretty darn simple but you know it's a boat. Please take a look at this video and let me know if you know where it is.

Part #13, why can't I find it?

you might not have it, our 2002 does not. We have the pill bottle secondary and racor primary, no inline.

It’s missing on your genny.

1st turn off the fuel valve at the tank!! It at the top back of the starboard tank.

Then remove the fuel hose, insert the new filter in its place and connect the fuel line back up to the back of the new fuel filter.

Open Fuel Valve and fire it up.

sometimes I wonder how I've survived this long....in my head I never had one to start to I couldn't add it, of course I can lol

Mine just has the Racor & the engine-mounted pill bottle-sized filter... 8.0 BTD. Currently with head & H/E off to repair shop.

What filter are you referring to?

Went ahead and replaced the racor, it has about 60 hours on it since I replaced it June 2022. 3/4 of it was black, is that normal?

Ooooo - black isn't good. Is your Racor for the engine on that tank also black?
You probably need to get a shock treatment of Biobor going on that tank.
And pull the filter assembly and take it apart and clean it - it will have black algae all over it also.

Are you not using Mr. Webster's fuel treatment/cocktail regiment?
Absolutely, have been since I purchased the boat 13 months ago. Every time I add fuel I also add:

  • Stanadyne 38561 Diesel Lubricity Formula
  • BIOBOR JF Diesel Fuel Additive
  • Power Service Diesel Kleen + Cetane Boost

Lost a couple hundred WOT RPMs between winter and spring, wondering if this is the source now.

Yup, just read this: http://www.clubsearay.com/index.php?threads/racor-diesel-fuel-filters.97897/ and the dirty fuel part of Franks article.

I have ordered this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005IUP9LC/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=A6M42E9KHNE4M&psc=1 and I already have some of the 911.
Biobor is the appropriate algicide for that condition. Shock is between 4 and 8X the recommended maintenance level.
You will probably need to do at least a couple of tanks of fuel of the shock treatment. I'd treat then run the tanks down to 1/4 level then refill and treat again. The principal cause of an algae problem is water in the bottom of the fuel tank. The 911 will help to absorb the water into the fuel.

Hold on.

Is it black slimy and/or stringy or is it like a light oily dust or powdery?

If the former , shock with Bio-Bor and treat with Diesel Kleen green label Run the fuel out and repeat.

However, if it’s a light and dusty it may be as Asphaltenes which are a byproduct of being heated and pressurized in the injection system. A little bit of that is normal.

Post some pictures. If you’ve been following the “cocktail” it likely isn’t a biological infection.

I was going to take some pictures but forgot and threw them away at the marina. It wasn't slimy or stringy. And it was only halfway up the filter from the bottom, top half was clean. Best way to describe it is black, perhaps like thin oil but I didn't touch it. It was not light or dusty. Top half was still the yellow color from the material used for the filter.

That sounds like Asphaltenes as @dtfeld Dave mentioned. How long has it been since you changed out the filters? Also what micron are you using?

Took this video to show starting the generator. Ignored the last part where it started and shut off. When letting go of the preheat switch at the generator it shuts off, back at the cabin panel it stays on.

Does this sound like normal starting to you? Again ignored the last part, not sure what that is.
