Steps to start diesel generator

Generator is its own bank, one single battery. Its a Group 31 in my boat, but may be a Group 27 in some It easy to identify as it has thinner battery cables running to it, and does not have a jumper for a second battery. In My boat it is the outermost battery, and therefore easily changed.

I'm a fan of the Duracell Marine AGM $215 @ Sams. I'm getting 8-9 years out of them. Go online to see what locations have them. Made by Deka and they charge a lot more for some other brands that are the same battery under the label.

Wow! That battery was approx $160 in 2019. Of course, diesel was about $2/gallon then. Oh, the good ole days.

On sale $149 a couple years ago.

For what ever it may be worth. I connected my generator to my port engine battery. I also removed the field wire from the alternator of the generator (so it won't fight the engine alternator). Made room for the two 8D's I use for starting batteries. One for each engine, no other battery(s) only the two 8D's.

Have Hernia Insurance?! The G31's are bad enough!!

That's no lie! I just replaced the two of them and used a make shift rope winch to get them in/out of the engine room.

I'll depart to another direction - Three bank battery charger, Three charging alternators, Three battery disconnects...
Keep three independent battery banks. It's seriously good insurance to get a dead engine battery back up when you are in the middle of nowhere.

Somebody probably removed it.

Quite honestly, it’s only a fine mesh screen, so I’m not sure it’s very necessary as you have the Racor upstream, and the final on engine downstream…

Excellent, a $60 part I'll never need.

I did confirm that's the fuel lift pump, and it is clicking, though inconsistently, when preheating, please let me know your thoughts if this is how it should be

Well, westerbeke thought to include it when they built it. I'm not the expert, and I also installed one on mine, but just take a look inside...Not much.

Doesnt hurt to have it, but keeping the Racor on the final on engine filter clean will likely get you everything you need.
