420 DA Thread

AIG thru NBOA was requiring me to get a Survey last year at renewal (July). I told them I've only owned the boat for two years. I just gave you a survey two years ago. They said OK but I bet they require one this year. Since my boat is out of the water already for winter maybe I should just get it done and avoid a haul out charge....
Before you do that you should make sure they are renewing your policy. I’d have a conversation with NBOA before you do anything

I've got it bad this year...
CNC cut some blocks to Raise the hydraulic platform up to be flush with boat. Machining one last modification today.
New Walker Airstep's. On order.
New Isotta Pachu Steering wheel P/N 731-1200BK. Wheel puller on boat now. Need to find Sea Ray Center cap?
Changed out the Raymarine RD424HD Dome out for the new Magnum w/ 4' open array. Done.
Re-calked the front wind shield. Done.
Had privacy screens made for the rear aft canvas. Done.
Marking all chain rode at 20' increments. Will have to do on the dock.
Re-spray our cockpit table clear coat. In Next two weeks.
Change engine Magnesium ( zinc) bolts out. On Order.
Touch up gel chip in Platform. This Saturday.
Pro-Glow Marine, Touching up ceramic coat.
Sending out cockpit carpet for steam Clean and scotchgaurd.
Then on to mounting trim tabs on Highfield 360 GT along with 4 JL speakers.

Who has time for a Job!

Looking at a 42 with a hydraulic swim platform how do these perform with the extra weight back there

and any diagram on the blocks to make it flush ?

So, the ride with a dinghy on back is really a function of the weight of the dinghy. We had a heavier Mercury Ocean runner RIB and a sense of its weight when planing. We now have a Highfield 360 GT ( Full console boat ) w/ a 30 HP Mercury engine. This boat w/ gas and battery is just under 500 lbs. There is no negligible change in performance. Our Platform is 12' wide and the Highfield 360 GT is 11' The Sea Lift has pop up chalks that raise the dinghy and after loading can drop the motor nearly all the way.
Our Hydraulic Platform was almost 1,3/4 inches below the boats back deck. These blocks I machined are 10" x 4" x 5,3/8" tall. This made the platform even with the boat. The 6" long SS bolts with large polished head were too short. Pam at "Sea Lift" made us some 8" long 316 SS Bolts. Only issue I had was how to hold the bolt while turning the Nyloc Nut and washer. I took them to a ban saw and cut a screw driver groove on the end. All worked well. Hope this helps.

thanks for the reply
I like the idea of the platform being flush
I looked at 2 boats with aftermarket platforms one 44 db and one 42 da
The 44s platform was flush there’s service records for the spacer install but the thing I don’t like about that one is the bow side of the platform has huge notches cut in it assuming this is because the rams hit it when fully deployed
Is this normal ?
The 42 platform wasn’t flush and no notches

All our hydraulics and associated mechanisms are below the platform. No notches necessary. I should say Pop up chalks deploy easy and when not in use drop flush with the platform.

What weight Delta Anchor for the 420 / 44 Dancer? I read some with 35lb . Is anyone with 44lb? We anchor about every two weeks mainly in sand. ( All Chain Rode.) Mike

Yes Flo- ( Keep in mind this is Wisconsin) We Bundle w/ home owners insurance it did not go up, $1247 includes 22 Highfield 360 GT w/ 30 hp Merc.

Can you describe the process of doing this in more detail? It looks great.
Carefully take a small blade screw driver and pop off the center cap. give the nut below a squirt of WD40 to penetrate the threads and spline. Give it an hour to soak in. I believe I used 7/8" deep socket to remove the nut. I then held a 10" center punch to the top center of the steering shaft, wrapped that arm around the wheel keeping upward pressure. I gave a 10 pound tap or two to the punch and it came loose, Another person to tap the punch would be best. when loose careful pulling up as to not loose the key.

Food for thought. Leave the nut on, backed off a couple of threads till she breaks loose, otherwise you may be making a trip to see @spikedaddy99 or @rondds (?)

We are talking about taking a steering wheel off a tapered shaft …… this isn’t rocket science….. a rubber mallet and 2 beers you’re done

So I see by your comment you have never done this before or you are doing it all wrong. Next time chime in and tell him how its done step by step.

Actually quite the contrary. I have literally done hundred's on cars at least 20-25 on boats and they all can sometimes the can be extremely stubborn. I always use the correct puller for the job at hand (and there many different ones) but I also realize that most don't have or have access to these. That being said, I have also seen a least 3 guys break their teeth doing it the wrong way over my 50+ years in the automotive business.
My best advise and "step by step" instructions would be to use the correct tool.

Hope this helps.

While clearly I cant even begin to measure up to your 50 Plus years of wealth & knowledge in the automotive industry. My hunch was a 65 Durometer cast urethane wheel with a metal insert was sure to fail. The puller would have distorted the wheel at a minimum

. I left the box of pullers on the deck and retrieved the wheel in outstanding condition.
