Opinions on 1999 56 or 2004 48 sedan bridge

Maybe just the engine Sea Ray started using after Brunswick created Cummins/Mercruiser Diesel.... and ditched the Cats. Implies a later year 48DB, I guess, not one of the earlier ones with Cats.

Detroit 8V92 (pre 2000) to Cat 3196 (2000 - 2001) to Cummins QSM11 (post 2001) in the 48-foot and 50 foot sedan bridges. There are some overlap in the years but this is generally how it came down.

The 480 Sedan had the Detroit 6V92 1998/99 as the standard engine, during this time the Cat 3176 and 3196 were offered as an option. 2000-2002 you pretty much only see the 3196 in the 480 Sedan. 2002+ you had the option for Cat, Cummins QSM-11 and MAN and in 03/04 Cummins was standard.

Several of the earlier CAT boats had transplants of C-12's put in them after 3176/3196 failures.

2005 the 500 Sedan Bridge came out and turned into the 2006+ 52 Sedan Bridge which had either Cummins QSM-11 or MAN's.

The 480 has the Cummins, I believe this was an upgrade for that boat.
As mentioned, I believe the Cummins were a later year standard offering. However there are known issues with exhaust manifolds caused by the props being over pitched. Most people reduce the pitch to achieve a certain fuel flow (18GPH off the top of my head) at 2,000 RPM. Tony at sbmar.com is the guru on this and he has published lots of info on that website about this issue and how to correct it.

As for earlier models, I also think there was issues with the transom and coring that was rectified in later models (IIRC 2001 and up).

The 480DB is my dream boat and I have completed a great deal of research on them. Hopefully someday I will move up from my 400DB.

Oddly enough I am always looking at and thinking of an Ocean Yachts 48 as a next boat. No idea why. Maybe it's from spending a few years in Cape May when the Oceans were incredibly popular and literally all over the place when I was young.

Is the 560 your looking at forsale with JFBYs is so have a look at the 98 560 with Cats for 60K less. seems like a good option, and I always think the best maintained or surveyed boat wins.

Thank you all for the replies and suggestions

The 56 is exceptionally clean and the broker had me speak with the mechanic who has been servicing the boat for past few years and he says it has been meticulously maintained and he has all maintenance records and oil samples and is happy to share them with me if I’d like.
Went and looked and the boat is very clean with many upgrades over the other 56’s that are listed.
Also the 48’s I have looked at have not been as clean and seem to have been lacking maintenance comparable to the 56.

The 480 is a great boat that fit our family of four's needs perfectly for weekends and extended vacations over nine years of ownership. The QSM's are the best choice in my opinion and the exhaust manifold issues are manageable once you understand the problem and how to minimize it. Bridge A/C and a hydraulic platform are a must on a boat of this level.

The early boats had cored bottom and hull then they switched to cored bottom and solid hull somewhere around 2001. There were some late 2004 boats that were solid bottom and hull. The early boats had issues with wet coring around port holes, engine vents etc...

Wait, she sold? I recall you were testing the waters.

Yup, gave it another shot in November and it sold in two weeks on the first showing then closed in another two weeks. It was the highest selling 480 in the last few years. Been a long trying winter with not many prospects on the market and the ones that we did go see were junk. Have high hopes for one that we're lined up to see in a few weeks.

I slip two down from an Ocean 48. The lines on those boats are really hard to beat, in my opinion. Post and Viking too. I'd love to get into a sport fish someday...
