40 sedan bridge forum

Only data I have is I had 8 women from a bachelorette party sunbathing on my bow. Probably about 1000 lbs spread over the whole bow. I’ve had four adult males standing very close in one spot. About 800 lbs in about a 4’x4’ area.
thanks Bill, that's very reassuring. I assume your master cabin still has no leaks :)

Here’s an interesting one. Ever since we bought a boat for years ago we have had a slight lingering aroma That we could never quite locate or identify. We smell it most when we first go in the carpet under the canvas and when we enter the salon door. Not so much towards the bow of the boat. We have cleaned pretty much every inch of the interior, removed all of the carpets from the salon (replaced with new flooring), made new carpets, cleaned the AC pans, cleaned the sump, etc. It’s not a bad smell per se, so it’s not a holding tank filter either. My wife described it as snowing like pickles. So a slight vinegar like smell. She has the better news than me and she has Identify that is very strong coming out of these vents outside the cockpit - the ones in the picture. These are air vents for the bilge, correct? So if there’s a smell coming from them that would seem to indicate a smelly bilge, right? Put the bilge doesn’t smell. It’s probably due for another cleaning, but it’s not in bad shape. So I’m wondering if there is some sort of gross or collection or dirt or whatever in these vent areas.

How likely is that? They aren’t really small openings So I wouldn’t think they would be susceptible to mold like our AC vents might be. But I don’t know. Has anyone cleaned these openings Down through the bilge? If so, what did you use and how did you do that?

I had the same issue with my boat. I believe the smell was coming from the batteries. I have been shutting my battery charger off during the week when returning to my boat on a Friday, I notice it has been much better

That’s interesting. I’ve replaced the batteries twice (first set ended up getting fried by a dying charger) and replaced the charger last year. So the batteries should be in good shape. Not overcharged. And the smell isn’t like rotten eggs (a sign of toasting the batteries).

I’m not sure I’m bold enough to turn off the charger, however, because if there’s an issue somewhere I want the bilge pumps to work! If it is the batteries off gassing I wonder if leaning the aft canvas off will help because it won’t trap gasses? And would a different battery technology eliminate the smell?

Could be hose running from bulkhead, along port engine to holding tank. If they are original could be permeating.

That’s possible. I don’t know if it’s original or not. But Wouldn’t that smell like the holding tank?

Could be. What if the smell is coming from the vents on both sides of the boat – not just the port side where the holding tank hoses run (it is)?

Backup camera added
Attached are some pics of how I added a low cost back up camera to view the blind starboard corner. The csmera was 30 bucks online. I dropped the center and starboard cockpit ceiling lights which made fishing the wires easy to the bridge console. Power wire comes off the fuse block and is connected to an accessory switch.
As I can see the port quater thru the stairway I angled the camera to starboard. Placing the camera up by the sliding door would have given a better width of view but there were no ceiling lights to make the wire run easy. Not perfect but for 30 bucks and two hours work backing into the slip is a lot easier.

Good idea , I moor solo a lot so regardless of wind etc , I try to moor on port for that very reason.

Does anyone have an idea about max weight on the foredeck , I am lucky enough to have a crane so that's where the 2.4m inflatable lives, but just wondered how much bigger I could go, like a small centre console would come in at about 200kgs if I kept the Engine attached, so that's like the same weight as three average sized dudes on the foredeck at once
Mine has bow davit as well. My research showed it has 1000lb capacity. At least the davit is rated for that. I couldn't find anything related to the structural capacity of the mounting or deck, however, one would assume it was designed accordingly. Mine has a couple stainless rails mounted to the deck that I put a SeaDoo Spark which weighs about 500lb with no issues or signs of stress. I'm not sure I'd put a full 1000lb on there although I'm sure there is a safety factor, but feel comfortable with the 500-800lb range.

many thanks for that, I have a good level of comfort now. Your setup is effectively the same as mine from the picture, albeit on my rack is an old 2.4m inflatable , one day it will be a better toy in same vein as you have

Free for the needy: one factory installed fuel sender from my port tank. Starboard sender failed and I replaced both with KUS senders. So the good one is available. No charge for it or shipping just PM me your address.

Anyone have a link for a replacement latch for the bridge hatch?

Just wanted to say thanks for all the great posts. Changed both Cat 3116 impellers in just over 4 hours due to the excellent advice from so many in prior threads. The Port side was 75% of that time as expected.

Anyone know what the rotery switch does? The light turns red when turned but nothing happens and stereo volume does not change.
Also what does the cable connector at the bottom do?
Thanks.

Larry,

Not sure about the cable connector. The rotary switch would be the gain on the Glomex TV antenna.
