Starlink

I have the SL ethernet adapter plugged directly into my Linksys router acting as a cable modem. I disabled the SL router in their app. so the SL router is only acting as a power supply, soon to be omitted with a POE adapter.

The Peplink needs a Wan license, although I thought it was included in the fail-over license, but there is no wan option in the dashboard. It worked briefly but stopped almost immediately. I ordered the new license yesterday but have not received the email yet. My plan is to use the Peplink with the SL, as all of my reading on this always includes a Peplink for fail-over. I should have all that setup this week and will post back what was needed to get there.

One thing to note Grant, I am in a non service area for the SL and it still works great. At times I don't have very fast download speeds, only around 10-20Mbps on average. But that is more then enough to stream anything you want. Some web pages are a little slow but totally workable and still no spinning circle on anything.
Orlando, if you already have wifi-as-wan then the wan port ought to work. I just went through this yesterday trying to test Starlink ethernet out. I also saw that there was no wan option on the dashboard. Problem was my wan port was configured for lan on delivery. The fix was to go to Network...Port Settings and uncheck the "enable" box I had on the wan port. Not intuitive at all but I found it deep on a Peplink forum page. Once I saved the new setting, "Wan" showed up on the dashboard.

Well I shot myself in the foot it seems, I actually checked that off purposely ...

It works like a champ now Al. THANK YOU!

That's interesting, I wonder what they are looking for for those. I am probably going to go with this at the end of the season and mount it flat on the existing dome mount I have, unless Max comes through with an affordable option.

You only need a 24" dome that the array can be mounted inside and your done. That is a nice option.

Would that be an HD7 dome and base to fit?
If you haven't had a dome off and looked at it, it is very thin material and could be easily cut down in height using a utility knife or fine-toothed blade or better yet and oscillating tool. You could take probably 6 or 8 inches off the height which would look really neat.

Yep, an HD7 that is 24" will fit nicely. Totally agree that the dome can be cut down if the SL is mounted flat and not on it's current base. It then would look like it should and not so goofy. Starlink decals can be had on ebay and the like to make the dome look like it was meant to be used like that.

The issue is those domes are ~$1500 for an empty one (new), but the insane part is shipping, they want another $500 to ship the thing by freight. They say it need to be crated to protect it during shipping. So for a $600 array you to need to buy a $2000 dress! At the end of the day the array should probably cost that anyway but it's the principle that gets me. Less then a $100 of ABS (or what ever is injected) costing that much drives me insane.

You know in the end if it can be flush mounted in the roof that’s what I want. I just think we need the full constellation in orbit to achieve that. For now the pole mount is good for me to do some testing and see how this all develops.

Grant, I cruised around the Chesapeake Bay all weekend ~100 miles. I left the TV streaming the whole time and I was on limited service according to the app. and had zero issues streaming HD video through YouTubeTv and Pandora music streaming as well. Today I have over 200Mbps, but that wasn't the case over the weekend and I am not in a "valid" service area. The mount I posted a post's above should work fine if mounted on a dome mount. It just needs to be above/below the radar's beam height at the mount point.

Now if Starlink can offer something like DTV where if you buy an additional receiver it's only $7/mo to have at home and on the boat. The concept is bandwidth is used in one location at a time. IDK maybe this can be done now with the log-in.

Tom, from what I have read the satellite ID or Starlink (kitxxxxx) as it is tagged to the account and billed individually. Each account can have multiple SL's added to it. It would be really nice if it were to work as you describe. But I guess Musk wants to recoup some of that money (if at all possible) he put in to all of this this.

@ocgrant Grant were you able to get to the Bahama's and use this at all? Curious how it went if you did.

In the configuration I am running it has been very good so far and totally while in motion. I have had to reboot a few times and once in awhile I loose connection for a few minutes but it comes back on it's own. Doesn't happen very often so no big deal so far.

No trips got canceled for weather issues. Still trying but time is running out before those north easterly winds start blowing. Schedule is full now until mid October.

Sorry to hear that. Bummer.

Huh, I think I already experienced this last weekend. I went about 15 miles and stopped for lunch then started back and half way through the 2nd 15, it just stopped working. I didn't think much of it and after I was back in the slip it started working on it's own again. That's kind of cool that is starts up again on it's own. BUT it really sucks for streaming music and I do a lot of that as I use a Sono's connect all of the time for just that. Well at least they don't stop your service and it starts back up when you need it or stopped. ...

EDIT: Guess I won't be modifying the Dishy any further then I have already and will wait and see what the future brings. Going on another short trip this weekend, will try the 10mph thing and see if that changes anything. On the way back on Sunday, I will try going at cruise and see if it dies again, guess I will also have to try at anchor as well. Man cutting edge tech. sucks at times ...

@ocgrant Spoke with Max Marine twice, once at great length and explained exactly what I was looking for and started the conversation with I am looking for a 24" dome. Then went on and discussed their project. So THEY only came up with a different kind of mount for mounting the SL inside a 24" dome and don't supply the dome.

I guess they are coming from the stand point of you already have a dome and are willing to remove the existing sat system in it.

I will say this, most 24" domes are ~$1500 and another $500 for shipping, which is absolutely crazy and would never spend that on either. A used dome on ebay, if you can find one is ~$800 plus the for mentioned $500 shipping. At this point, it may not look as nice as a dome, but I am sticking with my mod'd SL (so it lays flat) and the SS mount. Very curious where they go with the mobility thing and how plans and equipment will change.

That said the mod I am going to try is removing the SL router all together and plug directly into the Peplink. But first I have to modify to add POE with a power supply.

I agree... Looks like with all the Sats going up that the $$$ big money marine customers just got their new flat dishy's...

So I emailed them back and Zack offered me a huge break on shipping and also offered to split the cost of shipping. Not only that but also offered a reduced price on both (mount and dome) if bought together. I can't believe how nice these guys are for recognizing how much everything is going up and trying to help out with the cost of things. He didn't initially offer the dome up due to the cost.

It's crazy that the mount and dome for the SL cost's more then the actual array. Musk must be taking a big hit on the array (Dishy).
