Paint instructions now follow the example of herbicides and other regulated substances. The purpose of the instructions is to tell the user to only use an amount that would produce an acceptable result under existing regulations. So the instructions are no longer focused on the user obtaning a good result but rather compliance with the California evaporative emissions laws. Friends were doing their seasonal ritual coating their decks with linseed oil but not flooding as traditional. It turns out the instructions have been changed and they think putting the stuff on with an eyedropper is going to get a better result. When I explain, they blame my non-conformist advice on my political persuasion. Well, use common sense and assume Jane Fonda wrote the instructions.

I agree. Kalifornication seems to be setting the stage for most things environmental. Everything from banning internal combustion engines in cars to just about everything else. Next will probably be lawnmowers and other yard tools with a gas engine.

I've always been a steadfast believer in following the manufacturers instructions. I learned to fly and was taught my Cessna's instructions were the life and death bible from crosswinds for landing to the various critical velocities and stuff. I learned something about building codes and found the manufacturers' instructions for installation and operation were incorporated by reference and were part of the State's administrative code. This idea that the mode and quantity of application addresses emissions rather than functionality is disturbing. What are you going to do? The young sales people are schooled by manufacturers' reps who want to sell product under existing law and believe crap like using water based paint on the exterior of a house. In a discussion, I am always reminded, "Read the ****ing instructions!" as those are my standing instructions but this is no longer the best way to get the best result. There should be an alternate website for getting a good result despite the instructions. To conclude, find an experienced user and follow his advice despite the instructions. Except human nature is to believe a good result was obtained after much expense and effort but prior to the test of time. Don't follow the ****ing instructions!

I use alkyd paint on non-wood structures because it lasts longer. It is now outlawed in my state because of emissions.

So, now I take a vacation to bordering states and buy the good stuff.

More than 1 way to skin a cat, as they say.

If I lived on the west coast I would move. Nobody should have to live in a commie state.

Jane Fonda is a traitor for her previous actions and she should have been given a life sentence. Unfortunately, movie stars are heroes and get a pass.

I recall in the original release of Klute, Hooker Jane was in bed with a John but objected to some service proposal, saying that it would cost $50 extra. Did we ever find out what she would do for an extra 50? But then she used to fly around the galaxy in her private saucer looking for studs to bed. Whatever happened to the old sex crazed Jane? That Jane would have been lowered from a helicopter to the stage with ultra tight shorts, a cowboy vest, two 6 shooters and hips on a gimbal. How time distorts memories.

...and, it seems that everything I buy as of late, from paint to candy, has a Prop 65 warning label on it, telling us that it contains substances known to the State of Kommifornia to cause cancer. Do they truly know every one of those causes cancer? If you were to take those warnings to heart, you'd never eat, wear makeup, use sun blocker, fuel your car, or wear clothes. Y'know, after yelling "wolf" for so long, people stop listening to you.

The add 25% rule is a compromise and you may have to go to 50% but it is difficult to backtrack and some results may not be linear. Take barbecue grills, they don't cook well because the CAs were out on their balconies burning up the balcony above. So, you drill the jets right out of the box 50% but get double on account of the area being dependent on the square of the radius. Just use more but don't overdo it. Still, nice to be able to sear those steaks with raw flame. In CA, they have retreated to Foreman electric elements. Unfortunately double latex is still contamination of the surface. Works with linseed oil deck stains though.

Really simple, living causes cancer, therefore kill everyone and cancer is eradicated…

They might someday cure cancer, but really it should never happen. Our biggest problem today is global warming, yet nobody is addressing the root cause.

Its not gasoline or Co2, its that there are simply tooooo many people. They developed covid but it didn't work out the way they planned. These upstart pharma companies spoiled it all.

You're the guy with the bond portfolio in the midst of all this free monopoly money we haul to the grocery store in wheelbarrows, aren't you?

Is it really? When it was first tabled we were melting the ice packs and the globe would become a hot humid environment with rising sea levels. Now they are saying the low water levels and the hot dry conditions in the Southwest are due to - you know it - Global Warming. Which is it?

Y'all just don't get sarcasm, do you?

As I get older and contemplate the last third of my life span and how and where I want to experience it, I am wondering, do I stay in CA and fight the progressives or flee to a conservative state and hope the commies don't take over there? Alternatively I can stay in Ca on a paid for 15 acre estate and enjoy the prop 13 tax rates, unplug from the news and live comfortably in ignorant bliss. I look around the country at various regions but ask, will life there actually be better than in Northern CA? There are problems in every corner of the planet, some bigger than others but there is no Garden of Eden in the end. I really do miss being able to go to the local hardware though and buy a gallon of Methylethylketone instead of the joke of the substitute that I am sure you can use as eye drops!

I can understand your dilemma since I am in the same boat. I'm a 5th generation NYer and I simply love my home and area. Everything I'd ever wanted is here and my 50 acre mountain cabin could not be duplicated anywhere else.

I had friends that moved out of state, only to find that some of the atrocities eventually occurred where they moved to. Another friend moved to a quite conservative state, only to be shunned by some locals because they were afraid that NY stuff would follow them.

My resolution is that nobody is going to run me out of my home. Besides, somebody HAS to stay to man the voting booths. NY is 90% a red state. The only small blue dots are the big cities where all the freeloaders live.

Y’sure you’re not talking about Idaho/Oregon/Washington/California?
No, NY. The problem is that, for instance, NY CITY is blue, and they have enough people there to counterbalance the other 90%.

And that, is as F**ked up as a 3 dollar bill.
Herein lies the problem.
Yeah, no kidding. We have often proposed that NYC succeed and form a state of their own. The values and ideas there are completely contrary to the rest of the state.

In contrast, my travels in all areas of CA indicate to me that the nutjobs are ALL OVER. Plenty of sane people there, just not enough of them.

California, sure, but some of the most conservative people you’ll ever meet are on the east side of two notoriously liberal states; Washington and Oregon. Idaho is heading that way as the Boise valley continues to explode. Look up fastest growing cities in the U.S.
