Think we just bought a 2007 Sundancer 40 w/ HT and QSD 380s. Offer was accepted and goes in for survey Thursday. Extremely clean and cared for freshwater boat with an open-checkbook maintenance policy. Anything in particular to look out for or any common issues with this model? Just had a 1000hr service done (boat only has 800 hours though).

Redhook, congrats on the beautiful 40 DA (not 40 HT)! Sounds like the boat is in excellent condition.

90% of the boats from that model were with Hard Tops so there is usually no HT designation needed. There's a thread for the 390/40 Sundancer model that has many of the common issues/concerns identified. Generally, this boat and the Cummins QSB 380 (not QSD) are very well regarded and not prone to many mechanical or electrical issues.

Thanks. Didn't realize how many had hard tops though, so I added the HT instead of the DA thinking I was cool and would stand out. I was very wrong. Doh! Thought it was more or a rarity than common. Glad for your insight on this though, thank you. Last boat had Ford Lehman 120s, the most dependable diesel motor made. Going to an electronic controlled motor kinda frightened me a little. If there were common faults, I would be prepared for them.

Any good advice of essential tools for the QSBs? Last boat was so big I had complete mechanics tool sets. Not nearly as much space here. Just want the essentials here. I was WAY overkill on last one.

What do you cruise at and how many GPH? Any leaks (windows, mounts, etc) or other issues that are common?

probably my biggest issue with the boat is that it underpowered with the 5.9s

other thoughts in no particular order:
  • window gaskets deteriorate and leak
  • ac is noisy
  • electronics and audio outdated (but reliable)
  • clamshell door into cabin is a PIA... but no worse than the sliding door system used by SR
  • not enough storage in master stateroom
  • engine hatch ram lift went bad
  • center hatch window's electric ram went bad
  • wiper system/motor went bad
  • cockpit door safety relay sensor went bad
  • water pump on engine went bad
  • stock battery charger out of date
  • water leaks from water piping system used and cone washers replaced
  • 6 gal water heater went bad and replaced with 11 gallon unit

I've had many components on my boat replaced/upgraded but really only a few due to a failure.
