The future of EVs? Maybe not so bad?

For my state, I get charged $135/year for the privilege of driving an EV. That's more than I paid in gas tax revenue.

I have no problem with paying a mileage based tax, if that's what they end up with.

We need taxes to pay for our society. I'm not against paying them. Obviously to a point. But if i give up paying a gas tax, I'm okay with them recovering that money somewhere else.
But you missed two salient points - The first is government sucking everyone in with buying incentives and half-truths regarding environmental benefit and second, how they are going to deal with the loss of fuel revenue which will end up being a means to increase revenue. Rest assured this move to EV is not a dedicated environmental move.

Yea, where does that 18.4 cents per gallon (gasoline) and 24.3 cents per gallon (diesel) federal tax go? Does it go into the general fund? Ten or so years ago my BIL bought a Prius to do his part for the environment; they live in central Idaho. He is livid as the State has his annual automobile registration jacked way up to offset the revenue loss (gas tax) to maintain roads. He feels entitled that the roads should be his to use without cost.
No matter what one thinks the Fed is going to get their revenue and for EV's (once that gloss is rubbed off) It'll be tax on electricity, surcharge on tires, milage monitoring devices or something like a purchase tax..... I think in the end environmental benefits aside the federal revenue is destined to be higher than that on hydrocarbon fuels.
The tax money is accounted for separately. Below this graph is a table showing receipts/outlays. I wonder when they're going to start spending it. https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/highwaytrustfund/

You really want the government to put a chip in your car and track you? Yeah, that will work out well.

They don't need another chip... they'll just get the data from Tesla like everyone else does.

I didn’t say that. I already have to do yearly inspections. Grab the mileage then. Or whatever. My point is to say that I’m not against paying use tax.

Dude...we've already lost that battle.
For sure! I'll bet most would be surprised at what data is tracked in their vehicles today and has been for many years depending on year, make and model. Also, long before over the air tracking many modules store pertinent info. as to aggressive speed, handling and braking effort just to mention a few as far back as 1995.

Pittsburgh had a bridge collapse several months ago and it was noted that that bridge was inspected recently and scored poorly. The state claimed they had no funds to do repairs so when asked about the .60/gallon state gas tax (that is to be used for road/bridge maintenance) our governor said much of it was spent to pay state police salaries. An audit done a few years ago found that something like $4 billion was missing or unaccounted for. Now the governor wants to hand out $2000 to every individual making less than $80,000 because his term limit is up and the state has a huge surplus under his 'rule'. This guy is a moron and thank goodness for term limits

PA has annual safety inspections and I'm ok with that. Close enough to Ohio to see how some bad some vehicles can be on the road...lol

But what is really stupid is PA requires emissions in most counties/zip codes. My zip code does not but my sons does. He had a 2018 2500 Ram 6.4 Hemi (gas) truck that required annual emissions inspections. Problem was the law still states that HD trucks are still required to do the tailpipe sniffer test where cars use the OBD port connected to some sort of tester. Well nobody has these sniffer machines anymore. My son went to about 3 or 4 places and I called about 20 dealerships and inspection stations and nobody had one that worked. A few said theirs was broke but you can no longer get parts for them. Without the emissions sticker they are not allowed to put a safety inspection sticker on it. He ended up finding a place that had one and they said one of the local Ford dealers would bring all of their HD gas powered trucks to him to inspect, even brand new off the truck. Also talked to a dock neighbor that is a mechanic at a Toyota dealer and he said they do not have a sniffer tester either and when they get a trade in on an HD gasser they have to send it out. No idea why PA can't update their books to use the newer OBD testers on HD trucks. This was one reason my son traded it for a Cummins cause he works all over the country and actually was about 3 months overdue on his inspections cause he hadn't been back to PA. I have the same truck as his old one but luckily don't need emissions or I might do the same.

EV’s , we don’t generate the power to charge them. We also do not mine enough rare earth elements to build them, lithium. It’s still a pipe dream for the next few decades in my opinion.
In fact doesn’t matter to me since I will be driving around in a superduty ford.

Amen - There are a lot of shit boxes rolling around Ohio - I would have ZERO problem with Ohio adopting an annual inspection.

I lived in PA….vehicle inspections are a money grab….the shit vehicles stay on the road….you can get around anything…..don’t wish this dictatorship on us……what’s next mandatory boat inspections?….mandatory home inspections ?
