My 2001 Sea Ray 380DA has the below running/anchor light combo. It's held on by a flimsy plastic nut. The running light will not come on and the anchor light comes on intermittently. Before I invest anymore time/money into fixing it I'd rather replace/upgrade it. Part #4 is 821272 LIGHT NAV MASTHEAD COMBO 24" CUST W/RADAR BND. A Google search doesn't return much.

First, are there any good LED replacements that will not require modifications to install?

Second, from a meets requirements (or exceeds) point of view do I have to mount it like this, with a bend behind the radar dome? Can I mount a straight 24" one to the left or right of the dome, so I do not have to remove and reinstall the dome? Sure it may look odd, but I may be OK with that.

Thanks

Those are the biggest PITA there is for a light. I had to remove my whole radar mount to re-wire and fix it. I had the mount re-powder coated while it was off. The $2 light bulb fix was quite costly.

I contacted perko and was informed this was a custom made just for Sea Ray.

Hello Sir,

Thank you for the email.

Unfortunately we do not have replacement.

That light was custom made at the time for Sea Ray to their specs.

We do not manufacture anything that would come close to that in our regular line.

The link below shows a similar light part of regular production but is not a combo.

You need to contact Sea Ray they may be able to help you.

Thank you."

This is my radar dome and the current masthead mount. The link is options Defender marine sent me for a replacement combo masthead. I have never installed/uninstalled a radar dome so I don't know what my options are to replace the masthead. I think at a minimum I will need to uninstall the dome, install a new dome mount that one of these mastheads will attach to, and then reinstall the dome?

Thoughts from those who have done this before?

So your mount is a custom mount made by the PO, or at least it looks to be. There are four bolts that go into the bottom of the raydome, they have built in nuts on the inside of the bottom of the dome. I can't tell from the pictures, but the below link should fit the two bolts on the underside of the dome should match the slots in the light. It states that the light fit's 18 and 24" Raydomes, so that should do the trick as long as there is still wire outside for the light, you shouldn't have to remove it completely.

This light should work: https://www.defender.com/product.jsp?path=-1|344|2028703|2029048&id=609728

Thanks Orlando, I was thinking that one might work as well. Looks like the light is not included, and it's on back order, ugh, no anchoring out for us this season.

Well I'm sure you could find a way to hoist up an all-around white light when you're at-anchor. The only tough part is keeping it there whilst underway!

Anchor before dark and go full MacGuyver with a stick, LED light, rope...duct tape.

Funny you say duct tape, I was thinking there has to be a way to get that crappy pole working correctly with some kind of tape. I think at this point the issue might be corrosion and/or the pins aren't lining up correctly.

These look perfect, however I cannot see the end that mounts to know if it will work. I tried calling them, no luck.

It's the same one as on defender.com that is backordered.

Ordered

  • Aqua Signal Series 40 All-Round Navigation Light - White Light - BLA S
  • Scanstrut Light Bar

from Defender. I will keep you posted how the install goes.

One issue with this approach. We are longer than 39.4’ and to be legal running you need a combination masthead/all around white light in that position. Yes you’ll be legal to anchor, but not run. Might also be an issue during future sale/survey.

I fought that damn light for 2 seasons and finally fixed it right with a Seaview radar mount/LED light combo. This is one of my favorite fixes/upgrades. I know you got your hands full, but this was really easy project, that once completed I’ve never questioned weather the light would/would not work, and it looks great too. Cost isn’t too bad either.

One other issue I found was there was water getting under the original radar installation, and there was some rotting in the arch. I solved that too by adding a pc of Starboard and sealing it up.

Just saw this post. I went with the Edson Marine dual LED mast light. It was a direct replacement for the existing fixture. I reused the mast (custom bent tubing that is not available), and also replaced the mount as it was starting to corrode. So with a new LED light and a new mount it is better than new.

The light is pricey and appears to be a repackaged Attwood 7800 series light, but was the best option i saw out there.

As @dtfeld mentioned the light you ordered is not right for your boat. https://www.fisheriessupply.com/uscg-navigation-lights

You need a dual purpose light a top of the mast head forward facing and a lower transom mounted one for navigation. The masthead light is almost always a dual purpose nav/anchor light and is usually three wires so that the rear facing anchor portion of the light and the forward nav portion of the light can be on at the same time to act as the anchor light and forward facing only for navigation.

Yeah, I was wondering about that. Current one is navigation and running, with 3 wires/pins, which I assumed the new on is as well.

Crap, oh well, I will return it.

Defender does not know what my options are. Can any of you suggest a light that works with that light bar? This is all new to me, trying to figure it out.

This is the best the can do: https://www.defender.com/category.jsp?name=navigation-lights&path=-1|65136&id=2312550

That's what I have on the exiting pole. Ugh, I think I will cancel the pole order with Defender.

The issue is not the light, it’s the mount/pole. Because you have a radar, mounting a light on center line and getting clearance around the radar dome is difficult to find anything that works short of the radar mounts.

Believe me I looked and I waited hoping to find something cheap and easy. I finally said F*** it and got the SeaView mount. This is one where if you byte the bullet and do it right the first time, it’s just easier.

Here is the Attwood light…but like I said, the pole. Is the issue…
