30hrs of boating hours without actually boating :)

Left the boat on Friday night with both engines reading 490 and 487 approximately.
Came back Sunday afternoon to find Port Engine reading over 520hrs on dash.
I accidentally left Port side engine ignition on.
I Had no idea the engine hours keep counting with just ignition on :(
Very weird to me why they would design it that way.
 
I agree, that’s weird they’d be set up that way, you’d think the hour gauges would be powered up by alternator, that way they only advance when engine is running…..
 
Some tachs advance on just ignition voltage applied, others (like Fierra) need rpm signal and voltage applied to advance.
 
2003 280DA. Very messed up design. Imagine leaving the ignition on by accident for a whole week.
 
I hate this alarm. Low oil pressure. No shat Sherlock it’s not running. But try to trace a problem that requires juice to ignition but no start and your ears ring for 3 days.

Dash tacs count hours while the ignition is on. An engine scan will still show actual engine hours, so you can retrieve and report this number during a sale. Agree that it's still a PITA and unintuitive. When you look at the dash tac you will see an hourglass on the display when its counting hours.
 
That means if I could silence the low oil pressure alarm I could leave it on for 5 hours and balance out the hours?

Careful, your OCD is showing. :) Yes, that should work or buy new tachs and you’ll start at 0 hours. You’ll never get your tachs matching your actual engine hours again, if they ever did.
 
agreed its crazy. My 22 SDX270 hours keep counting while switched to acc position. So while on the hook the counter keeps ticking while the stereo is playing. Boat show 30+ hours while I know there isn't more than 10 hours of engine running time.
