My job, well, it was kind of a job...

IPO

6 figures

Paid insurance

Stock options (stock price is well below my option price now and not expected to rise- but did good last year)

Not to mention the other benifits, 401K, etc.

This was a merge situation a couple yrs ago. We still (mostly my son and nephews) run three other operations. I got sucked back into corporate as a result. Dammit

I quit that 5 yrs ago after 35 yrs. I thought

Had a good ride, but done.

Gonna continue to help the kids with thier operations and try to help them be more successful.

Crazy life.

On another note I'm picking up my new custom mattress and sheet sets tomorrow morning to take down to The Office ( for the cap't qrtrs) Friday in prep for a weekend inshore fishing (trout, reds) this weekend with Son and Grandson. That's what it's about for me.

Life is interesting at times.

Fair seas and following winds to all.

Good for you! It is such a blessing to have a position that you do not NEED. When the position gets in the way of your quality of life and you have done what is required to be financially set, the only smart thing to do is move on. My wife recently went back into the lion's den and took a position at a regional community bank as VP of compliance. She spent the past 30 years either in oversight of compliance with the FDIC or teaching the law to the banking industry. She never worked at a bank though. Now she in responsible for compliance of a 7 billion dollar institution with a staff of 4 and she is stressed out all the time. I keep telling her that we are set for life so she needs to treat her job as a hobby at this point, if it is not enjoyable, quit and find something that is. She set her mind to rebuilding the bank's compliance program from scratch and wont quit until she is done no matter how it stresses her out. I just shake my head and say yes dear, and head for the boat:cool:
Enjoy writing your next chapter!
Carpe Diem

Indeed. Sounds like my wife, retired 1.5yrs at 55. Obsessive compulsive ADD Multitasker, she was in corp for 25yrs and was THE go-to person for the owners, VP and board for all aspects of the operation (same company the whole time). She's calming down now though, doing the ERP system for the kids, keeps her busy.

I've got alot of projects to catch up on, kids don't need me all the time at the shops.

I agree wholeheartedly about doing what you like, not necessarily what you are an expert in. You can be good at many things.

Yeah, I am going through the same contemplation's, retire early or wait. If I retire now, then what? Busy for a while, bring home less money. Crazy.

Good Luck!

I have been thinking about this for a while as well. I could probably retire now, and be okay, but it would feel strange not having income. I guess a paycheck really as retirement funds would be income. My friends who have retired say health insurance and medical expenses are the big ticket items that are getting them. For that reason I started maxing my contribution to a health savings account about 5 years ago.

It's all good folks. That first Monday I was freaking out-no "job" to go to. A 45 yr habit of getting up and going to "someplace" to work was gonna be hard to break, still is. I can't stay away from the kids shops though...last Fri nite I helped our Ops Mgr process a new mold in a new to us machine, we got done at 9pm, yesterday another one till 8pm. Did not touch a thing, let him work through it and offered suggestions and explanations along the way. Sharing knowledge.

Still felt rewarding.

So far I have learned:

Your identity is not what your career was, yep

Seems like no one really needs you nowadays sometimes-but hey, I got a boat

It is important to be of value to others (that's what you did at your career) in family and life- purpose

If you don't have one, get a hobby, don't be sedentary. I have two of them- 68-69 Torinos and.....oh yeah-boats.

I have a 1978 Gheenoe my Dad bought me for my 15th Bday. I grew up in it, my son and nephews the same. I am taking it to get the hull and transom rebuilt, and then outfit it very nicely for my 9yr old grandson. That will be cool. That 'ole boat has seen alot of things in it's day.

Next week I'll be at the airshow in Oshkosh manning the booth

I'll figure out the next two weeks after that. Thinking tha 23 Bay down to the gulf for a week or two...

Still wierd....

I used to do corporate stuff in healthcare. I watered gardens today and read a book.

That sounds terrifying to me!

We're 2 years out but definitely slowing it down now. I have a lot of hobbies but a couple are physical and I wonder how long my body will take the abuse. Once those are gone I'm going to have to find something new.

Will be fun finding out.

I did it yesterday.

Next Friday is it...about 15 months early.

I'll figure it out while floating around on the lake.

Got the retirement thing down pat. I always have something to do and try to accomplish something daily. Early riser and go through a pot of coffee before 7 or 7:30 watching the local news heads, Sportcenter and taking the dog for his morning walk. I mow more than I need to but I like do do it. Today it was too hot for MIL to be outside so no dragging her out to the boat. So I decided to get a battery level gauge for the golf cart. Made a little bracket and headed to the marina and mounted it.
Never have to put up with restaurant waits because we can get out before the workers get home.
No way would I want to go back to the grind....

This is the weird one for me to get over as I have been the go to for too many years. I sold the business a couple months ago and our agreement is I work full time first 90 days then 2 days a week for a bit after that and new owners paying health insurance for wife and I til I am out 100%.
One side of me says get 100% out and then the other side says heck 2 days a week at nice pay and health insurance isn’t bad plus I’m a bit worried that I will get bored if I retire 100%

I have pulled the trigger on an early retirement that starts October 1st. There are some personal family reasons for going a year earlier than my master plan to retire at 60, but life happens I guess. I will be 59. I won't miss the crazy long hours and high stress of being a partner in a large professional services firm. Clients always had to come first, often at the expense of family and definitely of my personal time. That all changes very soon. I'll miss the money coming in, but now I have time to enjoy the fruits of 37 years. I just need to get comfortable with spending down all that hard earned savings!

In the short term I won't be bored. I have so many interests that I'll now have time for. And my wife has waited long enough. So has the boat. It will probably take me 2 summers to get it where I want it to be with all the great projects you all have inspired me to do. And we are tearing down and rebuilding our place on Georgian Bay. This summer has been getting ready for demolition late August. 21 years of cottage memories will be torn down, and a new place going up. So between now and maybe next June that will consume a lot of my focus, between golf games, fishing and boating and a few trips. Its all great!

It took me a couple of years to adjust. I went back to work part time training medical students for 8 years after I retired. Finally hung it up at 75 for good. Now I manage my investments, garden and read a lot. It feels just right.

We both retired 12 years ago and I don't miss it much. I was a financial advisor and while I enjoyed working with most of my clients there were a couple that were just a PITA.

Now I get up when the dog wakes me up. We go for his walk, then come home, read the paper, check E*Trade to see if I'm a multi-millionaire yet, and spend some time just putzing around watching my Admiral's geese that she feeds. Last year she fed four who consistently showed up. This week that four showed up with 8 little ones. For a guy who hunted geese for years it's a pleasant change to just watch them.

Then in the early afternoon it's time to hit the pool when I float and read until dinner time.

Tough day.
