We back into our home slip and we always stern tie at local drinking hole. Once we got the 330DA with 4' swim platform and full bow pulpit + V Drives it only makes sense to stern tie. Plus it looks super cool when you spin and drop her in the hole.
We have many dock neighbors who bow-in and they leave their anchors hanging over the dock which pisses me off to no end.

185BR... And I backed in a few times this past week while at the lake! Since I have an aftermarket swim platform installed, the back of the little boat has a tendency to allow waves to overtake the swim platform when they get to the whitecap level at the end of the dock. So I backed in the boat a few times in an effort to allow the bow to take the brunt of the chop. Worked like a charm & I slept like a baby overnight because of it - haha.

Our slip in our home marina is stern in. Transient marinas either stern in or side tie on end dock (get that alot).

Have always been a stern in guy. Then a couple of years ago we were in the Chesapeake for the summer. Was looking at the slip I had rented, realized that if I went bow in - they view from the back of the boat was phenomenal!!! Finger pier was long enough - so that summer we were bow in. Guess it depends on the slip which a person chooses.

Why would you stern in to stare at your car?….. pick the best view

Not for nothing, but... This post is listed in the Sport Boats forum. Yet it seems most folks who are responding to the poll do not have sport boats... Amirite?? Again, not for nothing... Just seems weird.

EDIT: Ope! ...My bad. I just noticed this forum calls them 'sport boats less than 29 feet'... The Facebook group I frequent is called the "Sea Ray under 24ft Club"... Whoop...

Carry on, all you big boat owners who think you're sporty... :) :) :)

If the view is better bowing in and the finger pier is long enough then bow in, unless your friends are on your dock and you feel left out by doing that then don't.

Personally I am about to turn the boat around so I can use the dinghy from my slip, other wise I need to take the boat out and anchor to use use the dink, makes dog happy but sometimes not enough time to do so.

So I guess whatever fits what your doing.

I believe most here just click on the "new posts" button, not necessarily go to a specific sub forum.

Like most everyone else….I back in. So many reasons:
  • My finger dock is way shorter than the boat is long.
  • The shore power is on the main dock.
  • Small marina means not many people to talk to.
  • Backing in is not hard with the thrusters.
  • Would not want the anchor overhanging the dock.
I have a finger, but most marinas around here don’t. They just have pilings and a main dock so bow-in is not an option.

You can see in this photo how far I am beyond the end of the finger - where the piling is behind the boat.

Back in. Hard to get on a 29 ft boat with a 12 foot finger dock. Plus shore poer hook up at the back and would take another 30 ft of cord to run. Plus bow in everybody would have to walk around all those anchors.

It depends on where we are. Sometimes bow in, sometimes stern in. There's even times when we parallel dock and have a side tie.

One thing on bowing in and everyone saying the anchor will stick over the dock. If the boat is tied up properly either stern in or bow in there should be nothing sticking over the dock. :)

You overnight on a 185 BR?

Back in at home, request transient slips where we can back in. Power cord length becomes the issue.
