40 sedan bridge forum

I was looking at the Citimarine units as well. It can be used with existing controller and as you mentioned the price is attractive.
That’s what I would try. There’s a recent thread where the buyer points out packaging for shipping has been an issue for him.

Steve, how are you? I was talking about when we are at the pier and everything is closed up when we are not there. I was thinking about putting in an in line fan
with a dryer type exhaust hose and unzip one of my isinglass windows to exhaust the hot air on the fly bridge. It gets to be around 130-140 degrees up there. It would only be there when we would be off the boat. Greg

Hey Greg! Im well, thanks.

I Totally missed the fact that you were talking about when you were all buttoned up. You’re right, it gets hot up there. We don’t do anything special. I usually get the short straw and so I rush up there and open up when we first get down to the boat. I always have an extra set of clothes on board to deal with cruise prep sweating! Lol

Hi Everyone,

I’m having issues with my diesel generator sending power to the boat. The generator runs great but over the weekend it stoped sending power to the boat. I attached the photo because I can’t attach the video. The Caterpillar tech thinks my bearings are shot and they need to remove the generator or buy a new one. I wanted to see if anyone in the group has had the same issues or if it’s possible to buy a different generator because parts are no longer made for my Westerbeke 8.0 BTDA? I have 3900 hours on the generator and I’ve seen websites where these last for a lot longer. Thanks in advance!

I just got some BTD8 parts from Westerbeke this week, admittedly for engine, not generator end. So stuff is available, at least for the engine.

Obviously, you have checked the circuit breakers on the generator. Over the years there has been a lot of discussion and fixes on these generators (7.6 BTD and 8.0 BTD). Some needed to do a complete rewind of the stator and rotor and more common others found an inexpensive fix on diodes and capacitors that corrected loss of power. If you take time and do a search or read through the experiences on this site you will find your answers. Start in the General Maintenance/Repair and Electrical forums.

I attached the photo of the report from the Caterpiller tech. A couple guys in the FB Sea Ray page said to order a different brand Kohler or phasor - It appears this would be more expensive but it would be a lot faster too. I like the idea of starting back at 0 hours and having a warranty. Thoughts?

I have a Phasor and love it. Kubota engine and just runs/starts like it should.

what does a phaser cost? New generators scare me, price wise. I’d do all I could to repair what I have. (I have the same westerbeke).

About $11k with some of the extras-sound shield, SS drip pan, etc.

Wow. That’s a big nut! But I have a hard time crying poor when I just put hydraulic platform on my boat. Ha ha. And anyway, if my generator completely crapped out, I know I would spring for a replacement. Where we boat it’s just too humid to go without air-conditioning. It’s just nice to have an idea of what that might cost. Now I’m off to drop some holy water on my Westerbeke and sing a few hymns over it.

Was that an installed price or did you do the install?

PO had it installed. That was uninstalled price where he purchased it. Pretty sure an Onan was in it originally. The Phasor has the Kubota engine like the Onan. As you would think, the oil and fuel filters are same as the Onan and belts are even the same. I know because I had filters for the Onan left from the one in our 44DB and matched up perfectly on the Phasor.

How is maintenance access, water pump, filters?

Depends on where in your boat it is located. All filters, fuel, oil, impeller are all on the front. Zinc and air filter are on top. Mine is located on the shelf on the port side. Mine is not bad at all. I can sit behind the port engine and work on it. I have to work over/under the big exhaust pipe in my boat. Still not hard. On our 44DB, the gen was centered between the engines and behind then and the Onan was a breeze. The Phasor is almost identical to teh Onan except the anode is much easier to access.
