Cummins 450C
Hoping someone can steer me in the right direction. 450C Cummins engines. They both crank very slowly at start and I have been trying to track down the issue. Batteries have been load tested, have looked for bad connections, checked the air preheaters and they are successfully bypassed (was suggested to me they can draw a lot if not functioning properly). Changed out the seawater pumps recently and started the engines to see check for leaks and they fired instantly - I had forgotten to unplug the boat. It was night and day different in crank speed.

Battery charger seems to be working. If batteries are good what else could it be? I'm not good with electrical at all, help!

This doesn't help your immediate situation, but I was told to always use my emergency start button when starting my QSM-11's. They like a lot of juice when starting.

Had a similar situation with a large cubic inch motorcycle. Battery dealer said my 5 year old battery load tested fine. I said give me a new one anyways, problem solved.

Moral of the story is a large engine is going to load that battery a lot harder than that little hand held device.

I just helped a dock neighbor with the same boat this weekend. He was "sure" the batteries were good and had bought a load tester. Helped him pick out new batteries and the boat fires up now immediately. The port and starboard gauge panels from cummins now light up brightly and his fridge is now ice cold. (That last one may be coincidence) but I'll still take credit. He had always had to use the emergency start switch to cross over the banks previously. Change out your batteries and make sure to go AGM and set your charger properly. 5 Group 31's.

Car wouldn’t start few years ago, called my buddy, he comes over says, how’s the battery? 2 months old it’s fine. We spent the day pulling starters, alternators, running back and for getting all tested.
Finally he convinced me to take the NEW battery to get tested. Yep, defective.
It’s ALWAYS the battery first.

I was looking for more of the wife's problems...

Just helped a friend with the same problem and he had a terminal end that was basically half disconnected. Half of the cable was broken and load was going thru the other half. Took cable to NAPA and it was a $35 fix. How old are the batteries?

Your minimum wage load testing dude says batteries are good. Occam's Razor says they are bad. Who ya' gonna' believe?

I HATE batteries. Always first thing I go to. Wasted half my life chasing problems that were the batteries. Cars, boats, wife dildos.
Which is why I will NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER buy a vehicle that runs on batteries.

I always have to ask my wife why the batteries from the TV remotes are gone.......

Now this is funny!! LOL

Dock neighbors 2020 Tesla S just went in for service. $40K to replace the batteries... but they did it under warranty. It's always the batteries!

$40k for batteries . Just think about how much is saved by not buying gasoline. o_O

$40k buys A LOT of fuel. Well it did 18 months ago, anyway.
