Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

I might try to tackle replacing all of the engines zincs this weekend. Been watching some videos and see where some of the zincs can break off and they need to be soaked and dissolved. What do you folks use for this, I'm seeing muriatic acid and other stuff, looking for the consensus? Also how long does it need to set?

To clear the threaded caps you mean? I used muriatic. Not sure how long, I soaked them overnight and they were sparkling clean the next morning

Let's see if this will post...

Sea Ray factory tachs replaced with digital tachs

Initial runtime data BEFORE aftercooler R&R/service, valve adjustment, timing and injectors set - at CAT marina now.

Will check for full throttle travel

WOT PORT = 2656
WOT STBD = 2616
FULL WATER
FULL FUEL
50% + FULL WASTE
FULLY LOADED WITH FOOD, DRINKS, ALL TOOLS & SPARES
TEST DONE ONLY ON INCREMENTAL ACCELERATION in 100 RPM intervals

CAT actual fuel burn numbers provided by Dr. Webster

pretty low on WOT, are you repropping her?

Hoping not to, however the preliminary results indicate I'll probably have to.

No soot on the boat, a bit on the sides of the swim platform.

Let's see what happens after the CAT service of aftercoolers/valve adjustment/injector adjustment & timing.

IMHO unlikely to make a significant difference, but we'll have to see.

At this point, whats another boat buck ?

BEST !

is that what it ran when you purchased it? just curious, maybe the bottom has picked up some junk and slowed you down?

she made 2750/2775 as close as we could figure at seatrial but had about 60% fuel and nowhere near the water/waste/food, etc.

This is the first time out fully loaded and with accurate tachs

When I filled my tanks up I lost a little on the WOT. They hit right at 2800 at the tachs on full tanks

Here's a good reason to have your 3126 aftercoolers cleaned and tested by qualified technicians:

this is on the OUTSIDE

The seawater side has been successfully pressure tested to 25 PSI - this is likely 3x what the impeller would push through a clean system at this point, especially considering that it has more than one path to travel (it's diverted)

Will likely sand blast and epoxy coat this one, while at the same time do a search for a POSSIBLE replacement.

This one will be installed on the STBD side so I can keep an eye on it.

Which digital tachs did you go with?

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.

I removed the FLOSCAN system in it's entirety from my 10 meter and have so far, only installed the tachs.

When they were connected to my Yanmars I photostrobed them and confirmed accuracy to 100%

It will be some time before I get around to installing the flow sensors and wiring as I have far more important stuff (like rebedding the hatches) that have priority.

UPDATE:

250 hour service performed

Valves set, injectors/overheads and timing

Aftercoolers showed far less oil film than expected.

Aftercoolers removed, serviced installed

engines SEEM to be quieter. Less "Diesel Clatter" at idle & seem to cruise quieter, but maybe it's just me

UNEXPECTED SURPRISE - picked up a few WOT RPM

fully loaded RPM on the way down

PORT = 2656 STBD = 2616

burned fuel for 47NM, but added the weight of 2 mechanics and their gear

PORT = 2723 STBD = 2707

Net gain PORT = 67

Net gain STBD = 91

STBD aftercooler tested to 25 PSI - held just fine. units cleaned, sandblasted and painted. STBD rusty area sandblasted then coated with epoxy. That said, can't see the inside so after some discussion I decided to bite the bullet and not to risk a $40,000 engine to a questionable aftercooler, so I ordered a new CAT replacement. Will be in in about 90 days.

Also added spring loaded condensate drains to the aftercoolers, hoses directed to the bilge.

Next step will be to install the fresh water flush plumbing for both CATS, genny and HVAC raw water side.

This practice combined with regular maintenance/service will restore these CATS to "baseline" and should hopefully allow these engines a long and happy service life.

Although expensive, I am glad I took Dr. Websters advice and had CAT R&R those aftercoolers.

Started pulling zincs out of the after cooler, they all have o-rings, the ones from boatzincs.com do not, did I get the wrong ones?

did you buy new caps? I just reuse the old ones and screw the new zincs in

I think that’s just a plug on the exhaust riser and the zinc is in another spot. I can look later mine is painted red on top
