That's an impressive piece, very nice work. Is the chart burned in? Little hard to tell from the photo with that gorgeous glossy varnish.

It is carved in by a C&C machine. Really is stunning work and the price was very reasonable, not even a boat dollar! He did the Apostle Islands for me in North Wisconsin, here is a close up picture..

So CNC? The water parts of the chart are carved in, deeper than the land? How's the surface made level? Sorry I'm just fascinated by this, it was impressive enough when I thought it was burned or stained but now you tell me it's carved...

Yes water parts are deeper than the land and filled with epoxy which is the final finish of the table..

That was my concern also, but he reassured me that it would be more that stable and he was right!
Only problem now is what to put on the bottom of the base, as it slides quite easily on the carpet and floor any thoughts?

Gorgeous! Funny thing is I was just thinking about making a new cockpit table the other day...something that's been on my todo-list for several years. 1-3/4 Mahogany works, thanks for the tip!

to keep wood objects from sliding, like turned bowls or vases, I like to use the rolls of non-slip cupboard liner. Should work for your purpose as well. for example;
EasyLiner Select Grip 12 in. x 10 ft. Shelf Liner, Light Gray - Walmart.com
