Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

Just did mine in Paris White as per Dr. Webster.

prepped and used POR-15 on any rusted areas

With the hardener the enamel comes out better than factory and is far more durable.

BEST !

A saltwater drip and some spraying from the shaft seals created a big mess.

here's a couple of pix:

@ RWS / Maybe a Dancer in your picture I am indicating where my fresh expansion tank is located. It appears it would be an easy add-on and mine was replaced once so I know what was like not to have one... It's better with. And nice job on your engines.

THANKS !

I need to replace one fresh water pump and add the accumulator (household) and a pressure gauge as I did on my 10 meter ...

The 450DA has dual water pumps and about 8 miles of water lines. I found that an accumulator was a wasted effort since there is a fast enough recovery when you open a faucet that the second pump kicks in immediately and you don't notice a pressure drop.

Also, there was a question by a smaller boat owner earlier in the day and I lost the thread before responding…….he wanted to replace his OEM pump with a 60 psi, higher volume pump. The accumulators Sea Ray installs only hold about 45 psi and higher pressue will cause the accumulator to explode………an accumulator exploding under your feet sounds like a 12ga. and will absolutely get your undivided attention and create scramble city as you try to figure out what the hell happened.

Not to mention the potential leaks you may introduce…..

Mine was OEM...

Was virtual thumbing the 3116 manual today and saw this. Is cleaning this Governor oil screen a thing, I haven’t seen it mentioned . I don’t fancy opening up my governors , I’m still a novice . I can’t even match this diagram to my engines based on my engine photos , an illustration of the noviceness perhaps

also, has anyone used a vacuum pump such as Airlift (needs a compressor) to empty and fill coolant. it basically sucks all the air out of the coolant side of the system, ensure no air pockets and seems a clean way to get the coolant out which I've read on forums is messy

Good find. Thanks for sharing the video.
I use a funnel set up I got online that connects to the expansion tank fill and has a central stopper plug. Just pour in till fill, run engine, then refill as air escapes. Low cost and no large compressor needed.
It does not vacuum test like the one in the video though.

Edit. EPAuto spill proof radiator fill kit. The red adaptor fits CAT.

Filled mine last weekend with CAT ELC coolant premix from 5 gallon buckets placed on the cockpit floor.

Used a clear tube hose and siphoned the coolant into the engines.

Only had to burp air out of one engine.

Was extremely easy.

I did the same method last month, after installing my new heater exchange cap.

It’s reassuring I can get away with a siphon and some tubing etc. and not get all sophisticated with a compressor etc. Thanks for those posts on coolant

I'm going to swap out the Sea Ray factory tachs tomorrow so it's done before CAT does the 250 hour service.

Can anyone please confirm 126 teeth on the flywheel?

SECONDARY PRIMER PUMP REVERSED??

Years ago my buddies asked if my new Mustang convertible was a babe magnet, I said yes but on mine the polarity got reversed.

Wondering if I have the same situation on my primer pumps which I installed last year. I turned the white knob to point to the yellow pump handle but found there was a suction on it meaning that I had to PULL it out and it snapped back in. I expected to have to press on it to pump fuel in to prime the filter. Am I again backwards?

I prefilled the filters so there was little if any air to bleed. Fortunately the engines ran fine afterwards.

i think that’s right. Never paid that close attention but I believe it’s a suction primer pump

If it snapped back, I believe that's the closed position. Flip it the other direction to pump fuel, when done flip it back and screw the pump closed.
