Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

Regarding replacing all hoses/clamps while the after cooler is off: I talked to CAT about this, they sent me a diagram and said "tell us what you need". Having never done this before I have no idea which ones I need. I read others on here purchased bulk hose and clamps. If I go with the later, what size/type of hose and the same questions for clamps.

Thanks
Use Trident 316SS constant tension hose clamps. They have radiused edges and full circle contact to prevent cutting into the soft silicone hose jackets and will retain tension when things heat and cool. They cost a bit more but will be the last clamp you buy for that hose.
The only Cat specific branded hoses you really need are the pre-formed ones and that little hose between the turbo and aftercooler. All other hoses are commercial marine rated hoses. The fuel system hoses are usually easier to have fabricated than purchase from Cat but I'd go with whatever is quickest and cheapest.

suggest you call Miley CAT in Ft Myers, FL.

  • Very knowledgeable
  • Very helpful
After reading others experiences, I consider myself fortunate.

They shipped everything I ordered, except for the coolant and a few other heavy items not immediately needed.

This includes every belt, hose, o-ring, gasket EVERYTHING I needed to do this project.

EVERY PART (so far) ORDERED HAS BEEN 100% correct

When I came by to drop off my coolers for service I brought them a box of doughnuts.

Ask for Donna Miley or Steve Miley 239-728-2217

GOOD PEOPLE !

in my records from when I did the AC’s and associated hoses I bought:

8 x 8T6703
74 x 8T9543
45 x 3718094
4 x 9X2488

and at the same time also did a bunch of other hoses and clamps

8 x 8T6703
32 x 3718122
4 x 7X7958
30 x 3718113
2 x 1121122

Those orders combined were around $450 and pretty well covered my hoses and clamps maintenance

when you order in SIS it shows you which hoses are in bulk and its obvious by the price per unit

I shared this list with my local CAT dealer. They quoted me $622, excluding the gaskets/seals. They were $124. Total parts is $746.

Phew, I need to get a 2nd job :)

Back to the raw water impeller bolt/thread. Is this required to remove the impeller, or a nice to have? I replaced impellers on my previous gas engines with a dental pick/screw driver and lots of elbow grease.

get the bolt

can be found at any decent hardware store

there's a DAMN GOOD REASON THOSE THREADS WERE DESIGNED INTO THE IMPELLER !

do the easy side first

BEST !

Here's a quote directly from Dr. Webster:

The 3126 has Sherwood sea water pumps. The impeller is a cool design in that Sherwood threads the hole in the center of the impeller to take a 3/4"- 16 tpi bolt about 2 " long ……all threads. You just remove the cover plate on the end then start the bolt in the hole in the center and gradually run it into the impeller. When it reaches the end of the impeller, the bolt contacts the pump housing and it just backs the impeller out of the pump housing.

<SNIP>

port engine is easy, stbd is not fun and requires you to get behind the engine….so watch what to step or lean on! Depending upon what oil pressure senders were used, you may need to remove them to get to the impeller.

For clarity, I ordered the bolt (5 of them in a box) from Amazon. Shipment date is unknown. I head out next weekend for an 8 hour cruise, some of which will be in open water. I am trying to figure out what's my best solution to replace the raw water impeller during that trip, should I have too, and the bolts do not arrive from Amazon in time. And the one on Amazon is not all thread.

None of my local stores have 3/4", everything stops at 5/8"

I would be very surprised if you didn't have one of these guys near you or surely between you and the boat. https://www.fastenal.com/locations#

Required IMHO. There isn't a lot of room and there is a lot of surface area on these impellers. They are not easy to get started, but once you do, the will come out. Bolt makes this a non issue.

Of course the next issue is getting the new one started and on the key, without dropping the key into the raw water system. There is a thread on here somewhere, a guy makes a tool to squish the vanes down to allow the impeller to be inserted, then you push it out of the tool and into the body of the pump. I keep telling myself to get one...
