What unit have you’s used to replace the old detectors ? The new fire boy seem to be a bit pricy ,

If you search hard enough you can still find Fireboy CMD5's out there for $60ish.

If you have the generator relay feature like my cmd4 did, I just replaced with the cmd6 relay version. It no longer requires the seperate relay box like the cmd5 did which saved me considerable time and headache

Safety is paramount in my opinion. Due to that when it comes to that price is not so important to us.

I switched to the cmd6 internal battery version. Its good for 10 yrs I think.

Newbie question. The previous owner removed my hardwired carbon monoxide detector and replaced it with a Home Depot style battery powered unit. Obviously, this is a serious safety concern I need to address. I have no idea which model detector I should be looking at. I have red and black wires twisted together (I assume to bypass the generator safety switch). Do I need to purchase a relay and a detector? Or is my application simply just the detector? Also why would anyone do this?

This is a 1994 SD370, thanks!

CMD6 at West Marine. I think I paid $120ish on sale last month.

I was surprised how small they were. I wish they would have came with an optional connector to directly replace the discontinued units.

If you have multiple battery powered units and test them regularly I would not be highly concerned with the hard wired unit. I'd be a bit surprised if you have the generator relay on a 94? One way to find out is run the generator and untwist those wires...
