When I started at the University the tuition was $200 a semester. I din't have enough money beyond the first year and I was NOT going to take a loan. I was taking the bus and the schedule didn't work, so I had to walk 1.5 miles twice a day to the bus stop. I needed a car, but the gas and insurance was even more a problem.
I found one for $200 and got a job for $1.15 /hour. Bottom line was that it all worked out, except that I was working / schooling for 16 hours a day.
I worked my butt off and the boss appreciated it. I got promoted to a senior staff and now got $1.35 an hour. The next month the state increased the minimum wage to $1.35 and I DID NOT get a raise.
Fast forward to graduation. Now a professional making $200 per week. Again worked my butt off and got promoted. Then with recession President Nixon started a wage freeze, so my promotion was with no value.
Fast forward and my boss retired. Another recession, so my promotion to his position was without a raise.
Fast forward and the company moved to an awful state. I quit and started working as a consultant to all their competitors. Now I make $300 an hour and screw them all. Working your butt off is all that counts in the end.
As far as waxing the boat, I do it myself. Not because I'm cheap, but because I can do it better an anyone else, and I enjoy the exercise. Besides, if all you want is $20 an hour (or even $50), you probably won't satisfy my quality requirements.
PS - I never considered any of my jobs to be crappy. I enjoyed every one of my bosses and they liked me as well. "Work ethic" is what make you succeed.
