Boat detailer

When I started at the University the tuition was $200 a semester. I din't have enough money beyond the first year and I was NOT going to take a loan. I was taking the bus and the schedule didn't work, so I had to walk 1.5 miles twice a day to the bus stop. I needed a car, but the gas and insurance was even more a problem.

I found one for $200 and got a job for $1.15 /hour. Bottom line was that it all worked out, except that I was working / schooling for 16 hours a day.

I worked my butt off and the boss appreciated it. I got promoted to a senior staff and now got $1.35 an hour. The next month the state increased the minimum wage to $1.35 and I DID NOT get a raise.

Fast forward to graduation. Now a professional making $200 per week. Again worked my butt off and got promoted. Then with recession President Nixon started a wage freeze, so my promotion was with no value.

Fast forward and my boss retired. Another recession, so my promotion to his position was without a raise.

Fast forward and the company moved to an awful state. I quit and started working as a consultant to all their competitors. Now I make $300 an hour and screw them all. Working your butt off is all that counts in the end.

As far as waxing the boat, I do it myself. Not because I'm cheap, but because I can do it better an anyone else, and I enjoy the exercise. Besides, if all you want is $20 an hour (or even $50), you probably won't satisfy my quality requirements.

PS - I never considered any of my jobs to be crappy. I enjoyed every one of my bosses and they liked me as well. "Work ethic" is what make you succeed.

You left out the part about having to walk uphill both ways through knee deep snow. (;-)

It was level ground in the city and most people shoveled their sidewalks. Knee deep huh? This was Buffalo, NY.

Waaaay off topic, but this comment bugs me:

"Fast forward and my boss retired. Another recession, so my promotion to his position was without a raise"

I see/hear this often at my own company. More though "Bob, VP of this resigned, so Bill, VP of that will now be VP of this and that". Seriously? My company recently did this, again, with someone who has no background in this yet he is accountable for this now, which has a significant impact on work my teams do. 2 for 1, give up a salary, woo hoo, execs are happy, make their goals and get their big bonus. .

Yea

Yeah it bugged me too. Your scenario fits me to a T. Management eliminated all low manager positions and half the middle management, consolidating departments. In my case I DID do this and that, so the only downside was that I had to work extra.

But there was an upside. They eliminated all VP positions. They were all promoted to Senior VP (can't make this stuff up).

I think the digression started with comments about being unsatisfied with substandard work done by a vendor. All too common today. Nobody wants to work hard, and in many cases don't want to work at all.

My cousin worked at Lake Geneva, a couple years after it opened up.
I do an annual golf tournament at the Grand Geneva. Then I found out my Dad used to go there in the 70's for his conventions when there were Bunnies. Bill Cosby was a guest entertainer for them as well. Bunnies would have been entertaining.

We are getting off topic, but there's a great series on Hugh Hefner on Amazon prime. I really didn't know much about the bunnies until then.

I used to go skiing there when I was a kid.

I'll update on my detail guy when. I have some info.

My first job was $2.15/hr….. fry guy at Burger King….
Lol, I was on the Whopper Board! Fastest Whopper maker in the store

I usually don't brag, but I have to ask if you guys were able to climb the ladder as high as me. I made it all the way to Production Leader...:D:D:D:D:D

I got fired from burger king twice. Once was when i hopped over the counter to get a girls number. The second time was when I kicked and cracked the front glass door, because they only gave my girlfriend a 10 cent raise. I also got a few warnings for wolfing, and dipping onion rings in the tartar sauce was always my weakness!

This explains so much...
