Should you buy a gun or not?

This from Fox News. A perfect example why people should buy a gun...

A Texas mother fatally shot a man who broke into her San Antonio home while her children were inside, Police announced Friday.

The woman, who remains unnamed but is reportedly in her 30s, was at home with her three children Thursday evening when she heard the man break in. The man, who also remains unnamed, entered the house from the rear through the laundry room. The woman grabbed a gun and shot him twice in the chest.

Police would later arrive at the scene to find the man in the backyard sitting in a chair. He died from the wounds on the way to the hospital.

Police are still investigating the shooting but have not announced any charges. Neither the woman nor any of her children were harmed in the incident.

From the Philadelphia Inquirer....

Two Norristown teens who attempted to rob a man late Friday died after their intended victim shot them with a gun he was licensed to carry, prosecutors said Saturday.

The shooting occurred about 8 p.m., as the man was walking to his car from a home nearby on Warren Street, according to a statement from Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele. Steele did not release the man’s name because no criminal charges have been filed in the case.

Detectives determined that a fight broke out after one of the two 17-year-old males pulled a gun on the man. During the scuffle, the man shot both teens, Steele said.

The man called police and attempted to give medical aid to the teens, but both were pronounced dead at the scene. Officers found an illegal ghost gun— a firearm assembled from a kit that lacks a traceable serial number — with an extended 30-round magazine nearby, authorities said.

Steele declined to release the names of the teens, saying there is “a lot of work” to be done in the investigation.

.

And having a traceable serial number would have stopped this crime how? And what is an "illegal" ghost gun? My guess would be a firearm with a serial number that had been scratched off. Still a good guy with a gun prevailed. Unfortunately someone had to die.

This was discussed 'HEAVILY' in both renewal classes (8 years CC) with the same instructor.
My 1st class, during the 1st hour, I remember being full of bravado expecting to come out blasting, until he brought up taking a life in the discussion, which turned out was a big part of the class. I am grateful that it was. It really made me think about what I would be capable of. Long of the short of it, it would take a lot for me to take a human life. Maybe some people are built for being quick on the draw (I'm not patronizing here), I discovered I'm not. When my CC expires, I will still take another class and will probably purchase another firearm. I'll still shoot with friends, hunt and at times, I may carry if I think the situation requires it. However I won't be the one on here to tell you it wouldn't be difficult. Heck, I get Buck Fever and have a difficult enough time with that.
Ya buck fever, how's that happen? When I was about 40 I was bowhunting and two Pope&Young bucks came into my bait at the same time. They wouldn't give me a good shot. I drew and let down a couple times. This was a chance of a lifetime, I never had this happen before, I had to get one of them. All of a sudden I started quivering head to toe and broke a sweat. I couldn't believe it, I hadn't got buck fever since I was about 12. I had to talk my self down, there was no way I could shoot the way I was shaking.

It didn't last long and I was OK again. I did shoot one of the bucks, it wasn't the one I wanted but that was OK. I had it scored, it would make the book but as far as big bucks go it was a little one. What a afternoon that was.

Bait? Really? Recently a lot of states are outlawing cellular devices with live data. I've killed my share but that ain't fair chase at that point

Owners may I seek you opinion on a new rifle. I’m looking into a new long range bolt action. Sig has a new line of Bolt action rifles. I’m looking at a Sig Fury 277cal. Don’t look at its price

In an ideal world we wouldn't need guns to defend ourselves but the fact is that there are bad people out there hell bent on doing whatever it takes to meet their agenda, whether it is to take your possessions for the money or for rape, etc. I never want to hear of anyone ever having to use a firearm but when it does happen and it is justified, well the bad guy took it to that point.

There are only 2 incidents where I was close to ever needing one. I may have mentioned this first one before. One was when I owned a bar around 1993 and 2 guys came in after close but there were still a few patrons in there. They 'demanded' to be served but I refused due to it being after 2:00AM and it was illegal. Long story short the police showed up and escorted them out but when I left about 20 minutes later they were both waiting out back in the alley where I was parked. I did not own a handgun at that time but luckily the police came around the corner. I bought my first handgun and got my CCW about a week later. The 2nd was around 2007 when a local crackhead tried to break into my house while I was home. Unfortunately I went to check it out without my gun on me but when he saw me he took off anyway.

And FWIW I have had 3 years of Tae Kwon Do, 3 years of Tang Soo Do and 2 years of MMA training as well as 6 years of defensive tactics while in law enforcement. Even with all of that I still prefer to have a gun on me for protection.

Not quite to my personal liking but that’s why they make all different styles. I don’t know where or what you hunt, but if you fly, consider what may happen if the airline looses the piece of luggage that has your ammo in it. Not sure you’ll find .277 Fury on the shelf in Tiny Town Montana anytime soon or ever for that matter. That rifle is chambered in 308 also, one of the most inherently accurate cartridges ever made, ammo available everywhere.
It seems as though it would make a nice light weight rig.
Very few things good are cheap.
All my custom bolt guns except one were rebuilt off the shelf guns from Walmart. In the end, about the same price as the Sig Cross, before glass.
We’ll need pics when you get it.

Is this for hunting or the long range targets? If hunting, what animals?

My opinion of buying that is about the same opinion I would have for buying an outboard driven picklefork boat that will go 110 mph for the family. Bad choice. But your money-your choice. For my money that gun is fuggly and impractical. If you want high velocity and a good looking rifle look at the Weatherby line of cartridges and rifles.

I couldn’t find the gun you were looking at on the Sig site unless it’s the sniper looking thing. If so, then I’d go with the 6.5 Credmore. As others have stated, finding that .277 round may be an issue. Case-in-point, I built a custom AR with two different matching uppers. One is a .223 Wylde and the other is a 6.8spc II. The 6.8 is set up for hogs, coyotes and deer. Not much plinking. However, I can’t find 6.8 ammo on the shelves anymore and it was sparse when ammo was available. Too make things worse the turrets on the scope are set for 6.8. In retrospect, and I love the round, but I should have spent the money and built an AR 10/ .308 or 6.5 Credmore.

Bait. Much safer than a bunch of guys with guns walking around in the woods shooting at whatever moves. Not nearly as fun as the comradery of meeting at the hunt camp and bullshitting.

you can find them but it’s not easy. As I have said, I like the challenge of long range shooting. I rarely hunt anymore.

Well, if you want long range step up to the .50 Browning Machine Gun round, aka 50 BMG. The world record sniper shot is held by a Canadian at over 3800 yards, a little over 2 miles.

Well then. Gongs or paper?
Check the ballistic tables in your reloading manuals for the BC of whoever's bullet they're loading in it and compare it to a lower pressure round with a sleek heavier bullet. I would for sure stay away from it as a fun shoot a lot gun. At the pressures that I recall reading about from that round, I would be afraid it would wash out the barrel in a hurry. The rifle itself is light, great for lugging around in the field, not so desirable from the bench or a tripod. Just one guy's opinion. Your's is the one that counts.

Years ago me and my brother-in-law were at the range. He has been a police officer since about 1981ish but he is big into hunting. He has a 300 Rem Mag and I have a 270. I was using my spotting scope to watch him shoot a lead ball that was about the size of a basketball and was hanging from a frame thing by a chain with a bolt going through the links to hols it together. I'm pretty sure it was 100 yards but he says it was 200. Anyway, I'm watching him then I grab my 270 and start watching through the scope. I have a Leopold 4x12. So I told him 'watch this'. I aimed at the chain and actually hit the bolt and it dropped to the ground. First shot. Now I'd like to say that I'm that good but I know if I tried that 100 x I'd be lucky to hit it maybe a handful of times. But the look on his face was priceless when that ball dropped and I called it...lol

Id love one it is very price prohibited. I think the lowest .50 was around 14 to 18g
