I'm not much of a long gunner, more of a pistol guy. But I did win an AR15 last year in an American Legion raffle. So yesterday I went out with a good friend to sight the AR and shoot it for the first time. After that he took me over to show me skeet/trap, which I've never done before.

What a riot! We did two rounds of trap and one of skeet. I fully expected to hit zero nothing. I managed 15/17 in trap and 12 in skeet. Not great scores but man that was fun!

Back to my AR...after my buddy sighted the gun I was able to fricken hit 12" steel plates at 200 yards reliably. Unreal. Absolutely insane to me. And that's with what I'm told is a "low end red dot" sight. I had no idea a run of the mill rifle could shoot like that. Really impressive (to me).

Fun times all around.

Those are great scores! Congrats!
I don’t shoot as much trap as I used to but do get a round in on occasion. Shooting the semi rifles is fun and never fails to provide a good time. I spend most of my time at the range on the rifle and indoor pistol ranges with custom bolt guns and semi custom 45’s.

I shot some trap before I sold my Over/Under. Had a good time, but I never improved in the short time I participated. Instructor would have been good. My Nephew was in the Trap Club in high school and was/is quite good. My club is $2 for a round of clays, so its a very inexpensive hobby.

Yeah, this certainly seems to have the makings of another expensive hobby :)

We drove past the sporting clay course and it looked quite amazing. And intimidating!

Our local Porsche Club of West Michigan does a sporting clay event every year. One of the best shots is a retired Michigan State cop. His training is on display every summer.

@Stee6043 If you had fun shooting trap and skeet, try sporting clays. It's almost like golf with a shotgun, where you walk station to station, and each station has the clays coming from a different position in a different flight pattern. It's my favorite shooting sport.
Yeah - that's a blast.

I did some as a kid, as my Dad was really into it when we were stationed in Wiesbaden Germany. He bought some wonderful 20 gauge shot guns while he was a member of the local Rod & gun club.
I have been considering installing a clay pigeon trap on the bow of the 506 though. What a hoot it would be to shoot off the boat!

Stee, I learned to shoot trap at the Gaylord, MI Rod and Gun Club range many years ago and shot trap off and on for many years. Loved it. I also love my AR. Fun gun to shoot!

I've dabbled and notice that I'm far better fooling around in the field than I am when it counts.

Always been interested in sporting clays...see.s more interesting somehow.

I used to shoot trap back in the 70s. Never got better than 22/23 out of 25 and those were my good days so lots of 17/18s. It was fun at night though with the lights on. Those clays really lit up!

Wish I had my trap guns though. A Charles Daly O/U, back when when Daly was a fine Miroku product and a Winchester 101.

I never tried skeet, nor sporting clays.

I have done a lot of trap….. not so much anymore. As a kid I was the one in the launch hut loading…. Loading shells for my dad and I was like a full time job…. In the basement with gun powder and a loader….. the good old days :)

Pretty sweet AR. Hard to get them up here these days.
Grew up and still loving the smell of burnt powder. Used to burn several lbs a year.
Have done a fair bit of skeet but mostly into handloading for the long guns.

Nice. If you decide to upgrade your red dot, the Sig Romeo 5 with its shake to awake is hard to beat for the price...

Nice, thanks for the tip! I'm not going to lie...I spent some time reading about Browning shotguns yesterday. But I really did enjoy shooting that AR too. Overall I think shooting that thing is about the same hourly $$$'s as driving a gas powered 400 Sea Ray :):) I think I put $200 down range in a pretty short period...@$0.85 a round...:(

You’ll figure out where to buy in bulk.

When my wife's grandfather died he left me his Belgium made (pre 1966) Browning A5 12 gauge. I learned to shoot skeet with that gun about 20 years ago. I am a 22/23 out of 25 shooter. The Browning A5 is unique due to it's high receiver. For the life of me I am no better that a 15/17 shooter with any other gun. Perhaps not ironically, the guys that shoot with me using a traditional over under or pump action with a normal receiver, can't shoot my Browning at all. I just don't shoot skeet enough to get better.

The gun I was shooting was a Browning, a nice one, but I have no idea the model or specs. It was smoootthhh...but heavy!

22/23? I saw the "league board" in the clubhouse when we were done shooting and those scores would be near the high end? Isn't 25 pretty much the 300 of bowling - does not happen very often, if ever, even for a really good shooter?

Good high school trap shooters will shoot 24's and 25's pretty regularly. In Illinois last year, there were multiple high school trap shooters that had season averages over 24.
