Retirement

You know Doug, you are right, my grandpa couldn’t wait to retire, always wanted to move to North Carolina. hit 65, was dead 6 months later never got to NC. Maybe it’s him telling me to do it.
I have these shitty neighbors …. I think the husband is gay…. The wife is the guy. We were at a neighborhood party around the same time I retired … She came over to me and said you are going to die. I was like what the Phuck is wrong with you. She said you die when you retire. She is a disgusting human but there is some truth in there.

I have 6 weeks vacation to burn by September so there is that too.
I don’t know what I am going to do everyday. I never contemplated retirement, thought I’d work forever.
The boat will keep me busy thru then but it’s going to be a bad winter with nothing to do.
I never expected this. It’s going to be different.

I dunno, you could spend more time on here. Oh wait......

Seriously, many are envious of your position of being able to comfortably retire, in good health, etc.

Things happen for a reason and you will be better off in the very near future.

Dare I say congrats!!!

I may hire out as a marine mechanic. Heck I can’t fk up your boat worse than some I read on here. Or a broker. Surveyor? I can tap a hammer on a hull.
Hell ya, big money after retirement.
Hire me. Need a yacht taken to Florida? Available.

I have been planning on early retirement for a while. I made the official decision March 31st to retire September 30th. After 37 years in my profession with long hours for 6 months of the year and longer hours the other 6, I can't wait. We also have some issues with our eldest son and its time I was able to take the burden from my wife. So its not all rosy. I will be 59 when I am done.

I am leaving near the peak of my career, so its costing me some real $$$ to leave. But here is how I am looking at it:
When I am 80 years old, if someone said to me "How much will you pay if you could have the next two years of your life with the health you had when you were 59?" I think that price would be far more than I am giving up today.

I expect to do some consulting/board/advisory work and maybe angel investing on my own terms after a little while. But the first while will be doing a few things for me and for my family. Its time.

So, @Pirate Lady, congratulations on your freedom to now do whatever the f-ck you want to do, on your terms.

I’m sure it’s a shock to find out like that. It sucks but that’s how it can be sometimes with the big companies. Wife went at 57 because huge company starts the ball rolling at 55. Her company retirement was 25 years and 55 years old. They want you gone, go collect your pension, new hires are cheaper.
She was having to much fun, I went 2 years later at almost 61. It’ll be 7 years in July.
We love retirement, but are very careful to keep ourselves busy and doing different things. If you get bored, consider volunteer work.

Sorry this happened to you. I have been let go, reduction in workforce (RIFed) four times in my career. I got a nice severance each time, but yeah, it was a hard pill to swallow, hits the self esteem to not feel wanted, let go. You will rebound quickly. I'd love to work for Home Depot or Lowes in my retirement, even thought about being a dockmaster. How cool would it be to yell at a transient "Turn your effing stereo down!"

Contracting out is never a good IT solution. Financials look good for the C-Suite though. My company signed a 3 year "managed services" relationship with one of the big international contractor vendors. It was miserable for 2+ years. As they quit on their own now I am replacing them, quietly, with my preferred contractor vendors and in some cases a FTE. Hoping they all go at the end of the 3 year contract, which is this Fall.

I can tell you what I won’t do; be these guys that hang at the corner bar every day. That won’t happen.
How about the guys that hang out on CSR all day, like us? ;)

My paternal dad was in IT. Retired in his mid 40s, made his $$$ in desktop computer sales in the late 70s and 80s. He went back to college, got his Masters, became a one man consulting shop. Developed, built and sold a software app from scratch. Retired again. Went back to work as a SQL Developer at his wife's company in his late 60s. Finally retired in his mid 70s. Now, in his mid 80s, he is trying to teach himself mobile development.

My step dad, who raised me, worked heavy construction almost every day of his life, running bulldozers, backhoes, dump trucks, etc. If he was not on a a job site he was working on project at home. A hand injury shut him down in his late 60s. They moved into an apartment then as well thinking it would be better. He called me weekly asking if I had a project for him. I never did of course, and now regret it. About a year later he developed dementia. I swear he was so bored his brain quit on him.

One of my very good friends retires in 2 weeks. He is 58. He received an unplanned/unexpected inheritance from his parents about 7 years ago. He has been planning for this day for a while, packing up and moving to Florida. I had dinner with him on Saturday, he is an anxious stressed mess, second guessing himself. I told him don't do anything with your house here (sell or rent), go live in your apartment in FLA for a few months, then see how you feel.

I will have tons to keep me busy when I retire. I worry about my health, my aching body, and running out of money. My finance guy say's I am ok on the latter. My aching knee, elbow, sometimes back says maybe to the former.

I’m 66 in June and run a global business so long days and calls with Asia from 8 to 11 four nights a week and do quite a bit of traveling pre Covid. I’m planning on another few years and although I say would like to retire now I am also nervous about keeping busy through the winter. As others have said, find a low stress job or volunteer work that makes you happy. You are in an enviable position in that you can afford to retire and do what you want. I have friends that are older and as long as you keep busy and healthy you’ll be fine!

@Pirate Lady I hope the Comments here help you as much as yours and others did on my "Chasing money..." thread.

Pirate Lady, I tried to PM you my phone number in case you wanted to text/call about any financial questions but couldn't find a way to do it.

Help?

Use your retirement to solve the plane treadmill thread, and the gas versus diesel threads.
Don't forget "can I use a Honda generator on my swim platform" and "can I put a pig on a boat"...

Hey Brother, I'll throw my .02 in.
"Retired" USN 07/1999, age 38, joined at 17, 21 years, same year (1999) twins 2A and 2B were born. Talk about poor planning. The Queen didn't want to do another (would have been our 4th) 6 month deployment.

Immediately went to work for a building automation company, moved us to NC in 2001, worked as a PM until the project was done, went into sales for said company and made great money, company was bought and sold a few times then got the tap on the shoulder that my services were no longer required, great separation package that still makes money today.

Ran my own pool service company for 3 years, most fun I ever had until I tried to expand and hire "people." Ugh

Worked for USPS for 12 years and have a nice chunk of money for when I turn 62 (1.5 years away) think repower of GG with new 4.3's

So now what do I do? I'm not one to garden, I like working on my cars, the boat kicks my butt because of my Neuropathy and the tight spaces.

Drive parts for a retail auto chain, it's funny how we (the competition) always wave each other.

My point? Sounds like the RR is going to take care of you, I can't speak to Medicare because I get full VA benefits at my Charlotte clinic and the Queen is still on Tricare. ENJOY it and find something to do. Mine is cleaning the boat then taking her out, talking with the mechanics about cars they are working on, flying the drone and cooking on the boat. Search the "recipes" thread.

I also like Jim G's answer as well...too the point.

I retired at 58 in late November of 2021. It was 1 1/2 years earlier than I was going to , but the federal employee shot mandate made it happen. I worked for a federal contractor. I'm absolutely loving it, have not had any spare time yet, and I don't have to get up at 4am anymore.
My wife is a few years older, she retired at the end of December after 41 years at her job. We're enjoying our life!
