Looking for direction/opinions on the pencil engine zincs, do you install new ones each year or have you eliminated them? I have heard to schools of thought on this. I have been changing mine every year but am leaning towards removing them and not replacing going forward.

Fired up the mains on Friday. I had cycled the lift pump three times on each side prior to starting. When hitting the start button, it seems like they take 30 seconds to start, but I'm sure it was on the order of 3-5 seconds. Just not the engage starter, engine starts instantly during the season. Happy as a clam! Now if we can just get rid of this wind so we can go boating. Spent the whole weekend at the dock. Oh well....

I think that anytime I have had the potential to interject air in to a diesel’s fuel system there is a little cause for concern. This was the first time on my “mains” with the common rail system, and installing the spin ones dry for fear of having a piece of junk clog an injector. For what it’s worth, my mechanic passed by while we were cycling the lift pump and he commented that he just fills the filters from a jug.

I have been filling my fuel filters prior on all the boats I have owned for over 35 years and never had an issue. I use fresh diesel right from the marinas pumps in a clean diesel only container The marina mechanics do it this way as well without issue. I am not a fan of cycling the pump multiple times for this as I see greater issues running the fuel pump this way. To each is there own on what works.

Yes I fill my fuel filters as well….

I fill mine up as well.... the generator one is tricky I had to remove the bolt that holds the top bracket to slide the filter in and out, is there an easier way?

All it takes is a little debris in the fuel and your problems just got big. I will follow Cummins instructions on using the lift pump to fill the filter and prime the system with filtered fuel. It is no more work to do it the right way, the pump runs anyway to lift fuel to the filter as needed so there is no extra wear on this.

For the generator it is powered by a electric fuel pump also so spin the filter on loosely, turn the switch on and let it prime a coupe of times then tighten it up.

Why would you suspect the pump sees greater wear from cycling? If it cycles for 30 seconds x3, how is that worse than running the engines for a 5 hr cruise?

Grant - many of our engines do not have the convenance of a lift pump or hand pump. I pretty much have to pre-fill the filter on my QSM 11 engines. There are two ways to pre-fill without contamination risk to the injector pump or injectors.
One - put a plastic plug in the center hole of the filter and fill through the outer perimeter holes. The fuel filter flows from the outside of the filter media pleats into the center and to the injection unit from that center hole.
Two - Fill using a funnel that has an integrated filter/screen.

Tom,
I agree with you 100% that there is a “safe” way to fill a filter but in our case with the QSC the way to do it easily and safely is with the use of the lift pump. Not everyone plugs the hole and or uses a low micron filter as you should doing it externally. Not to mention if you are stranded and have to do it on the fly with no access to raw diesel the lift pump is a simple and safe way. On my previous boat I had CATs and they had a manual prime pump that would allow proper filling of a new filter.

A friend called me tonight asking what I thought about a boat his friend was looking at buying.
The boat is a 2006 48 fresh water in Grand Haven MI…. Asking $575k. So a couple of questions.

- $575k :eek::eek:…. I said what?….he said fresh water is up that high. He said Florida is crazy too….. So question is what do you think this boat is worth?….. Just in general

- any one know the boat?….pristine, single owner, 650 hours

Oh wow…. My friend said it was in a new inside storage…must be it.

This is the only one for sale in our area that I'm aware of. Just installed the lift a couple weeks ago. Super nice people.

Is it listed by Keenan Marina? If so, we wanted to look at it last fall but the seller was not interested because they had not found their ideal replacement boat. I was told the boat was pristine & kept at a private dock behind the owners house.

Freshwater is definitely worth it, but that list is quite a bit higher than what we purchased for! We bought an 08 freshwater from Lake Lanier and LOVE IT! Just drove her to our slip tonight …. Then it snowed ⚓
