Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

After reading the link from @kvduff I now know what I can use my 12V Oil Changer Flat Tank for from my prior gas engines; to suck the fuel/dirt out of the bowls assuming I do not have the valves.

if they don't have valves it will have a plug. The result is the same, you just get diesel all over your hands versus the valve that's easy to drain then close.

Buy the valves, drain bowls completely, install valves for next time. I have done the same with my transmissions.
I have twin 900's for each of my CATs and a single 500 for my Westerbeke. I run 10 microns and some run 30...

2nd that for all racor bowls. Plug below the valve is a good idea too.

I think many of us run 30micro, some run 10. the part number is 2010PM for the 30micron. I get them on amazon by the boxload

The racor model is 500MA

to avoid any confusion......

Filtration unit for the engines are model 900

genny is the 500

BEST !

Been doing exactly this for about 15 years.

Also found out that if you don't use the additives, as per Dr. Webster, those asphaltanes will actually plug up the drain valves.

I dun lernt the hard way, digging mine out (only once) with a pick, an awl and a drill bit on a vice grip.

99% sure the 410 got a 500MA per main engine. My survey says 500 as well

maybe the 450 got bigger for some reason?
My CATs are twin 900 per engine and the gen is single 500 - the numbers are for the housing not the filter itself,
Brand Racor, Part Number: 2040N-10, Filter Housing Series: 900,

oh that confirms it then, our mains take 2010PM. The 370/380/400/410 must have gotten the 500MA’s. You can see it in the pic from @mrsrobinson above, just barely

now that I think about it - maybe a horsepower requirement? Aren’t you 450DA guys 420HP 3126’s?

I’m sure @fwebster will set us straight soon enough

So for the 500MA do I need the 2010PM-OR Racor Fuel Filter or the 2040N-10 Racor Fuel Filter?

The 2010 = 500 & the 2040 = 900

Dumb newbie question but what is the correct wot rating Just found a CAT web page that says the 3126 wot is 2650. Have read 2800, 2850? Cannot find it in the 3116, 3136 Operation and Maintenance Manuel.

I just watched some videos on how to replace the Racor filter. They suggest filling the canister back up with diesel fuel, video I watched looks like the dude was using a water bottle for the diesel fuel. Is this what others do? Is something like an empty gallon water jug safe to use for storing diesel fuel?

I fill the bowl back up with clean diesel using basic 1 gal fuel jug, put the cap on and then prime/bleed the system.

Then you need to bleed the system. I use the priming pump, but if yours is old or leaking, it’s a messy PITA. I replaced my pumps to make sure they function.

Frank recommended opening the throttles and starting the engine, then closing the throttles when it fires.

I close the fuel valve at the racor, drain them, replace the filter and turn the valve back open, they then fill themselves...
