Marine terms you hate…

No one in my marina knows what a scupper is, so I use the term all the time.:D

Next time you are commiserating with your dock mates and they have absorbed a few fingers of distilled product, start throwing around the term "Metacentric height" concerning watercraft and see what they come up with.

What I hate to hear is amateur boaters that have no idea that they don't know what they don't know:
"My anchor rope (rode) is knotted.", "Sailboats keel over (heel) in strong winds.", "I hoisted the flag up the mast." (staff). You can certainly buy rope but once on a vessel it's a line, a rode, a painter, a sheet, a halyard and so forth...
These people don't seem to know the buoyage system or the rules of the road, either.
Here is part of the problem…. What kind of person would sit inside for 8 hours on a Saturday in June to learn rules?…. I am pretty sure not the bozos you come across on the water

"... not the bozos you come across... "
Like the bozo last summer, approaching my port side, that did not recognize that he was the give-way vessel: shakes his fist and yells something unintelligible at me, as I am forced to avoid a collision.

If you have had some training it's good for life - literally!

We all have the same stories…. I am a bozo magnet…. If there is a bozo out there he is automatically drawn to me…. It is baffling

Before my first boat was delivered ….years and years ago….I took a power squadron course…. Every single thing I was taught I still use today.

OS Wiper 1/C
I hired a guy to work for our company years ago with that position title on a ship when he was enlisted.
One of the best guys I ever hired. Hard worker, knew how to follow orders, respectful. Turned into a great equipment operator, wrench and CDL A driver. A lot to be said for hiring ex-military/vets.
Ordinary Seaman, Wiper - First Class.
Now that’s a marine term you could dislike.

Fender…. I came from a world where a fender is a bumper…. Fender doesn’t make any sense. But say bumper out loud around snooty boaters and you don’t have to smile they already think you’re a hillbilly :D

I like this definition
fender
A flexible bumper used in boating to keep boats from banging into docks or each other. Often an old car tire.[2]
I’m a fender kinda guy but I’m not snooty you loser hillbilly

Ya …. Well… never met you to be sure…. Even though we went all the way to St Clair and parked in your friends slip to do so …. So this hillbilly is on the fence “fender boy with one head” :)

They don't know what a scupper is...not holding much hope for them answering that one.

Okay, I found one I hate

Well after much thought and consideration I did come up with germane content:

A marine term I hate - Winter.
Hey could you please watch your language, there are resonably insane northerners on this thread.

Words I hate: indemnify, hold harmless and indemnify, followed closely with additional insured and additional named insured. Each scare me more than weather advisories! It pays to carefully read your dockage agreement!
