$5k Investment NOW - Let's Beat the Covid Blues w/investment fun

Made 13.9% on DIS calls today in 35 minutes in one account and 20.3% on DIS in the other account. Made a few other smaller trades too. Both of my accounts are up nicely so far this year

I was late in getting into this thread, but, between the first posting date of March 24th, starting at $26.45, to today's closing of $39.55, for a 49.5% increase, or an additional $2476.37 on American Funds AMCAP (amcpx). Too bad I didn't have more to "invest". And, no; I didn't pick that one out of the blue just because it went well (I actually have some in my retirement account).

I dang near forgot about this gem of a thread. So we're now about 15 months post our initial $5k investment. We've had 3 different leaders in returns so far.

@JVM225 has retaken the lead with $25k of profit.

@Jimmy Buoy continues to trail the pack as the only one holding less than his initial investment :)

And as an interesting tidbit, were you sitting on $65,000 when this post was created in March 2020 and decided to invest in exactly what this group invested in, $5k per pick, you'd now be looking $175,000 in your account. 168% growth over 15 months.

S&P in that time has gone from 2800 to 4195, 149%.

DOW has gone from 19,173 to 34,588, 180%.

So....we've done okay but not amazing. It's unfortunate nobody picked Gamestop :)

lol. i forgot all about this. i would have probably sold DIS awhile ago and got into something else. either way i'm up about 85% or so so can't complain about that

The happy news is I really did to into Roku, except at 30. Will it die? maybe, will it be the next Apple? probably not.

^ Nice.

I don't hold anything too long but I trade options and they have an expiration. When they expire below strike price they are worth $0 so you lose 100% of what you paid. I never hold that long. Options are like a coupon. If AAPL is at $125 today and I buy a $130 call that expires in 2 weeks and AAPL runs to $135 on expiration day then I have the right (not the obligation) to buy 100 shares of AAPL from the seller of that contract at $130 even though the current price is $135. If I still have that contract and AAPL is at $129.99 or lower at expiration then I lose everything I paid for that contract. As the price of AAPL goes up that 'coupon' goes up in value so I sell it to another guy and make money. If AAPL goes down then I am going to lose money. Options contracts have theta (time decay) so even if the price of AAPL stays the same for 3 days the value of my contract goes down due to theta. Contracts expire every Friday and today I traded TSLA calls close to close and they were todays expiration. You could watch them drop in value. I paid about $135 for 1 contract and sold it for about $175 a few minutes later but TSLA was at (making this number up) $575 when I got in. When I got out it was at $577 but when it went back to $575 it was only worth about $100. They move very fast on Fridays. Very easy to make 100% on Fridays but also easy to lose 100% if you get it wrong. That's why I go in so light.

Today I made money on TSLA and GOOGL calls and bought TWTR calls that I'm still holding. Looking for a $5 move on TWTR to $63.99. Look at the daily chart and see a big gap up to $63.99. My entry was based on a monthly reversal. Bought June 18th $60.50 calls

Oil stocks 9 months ago every one was running from them today every one is running to them. Some have tripled some have doubled.

I jumped into AMC back in February @14 and slightly averaged up. Had an incredible Wednesday (up 110% in one day) and still up big after Thursday and Friday. The squeeze is inevitable. Just a matter of time.

I bought AMC at $8. Sold the value of our initial position on crazy Thursday. Holding the rest to see if it breaks 150. I'm still down on my other picks but time will tell...

AMC has the potential to blow right by 150. VW in 08 hit 1200, GME was halted in mid 400's. The number of shorts and especially naked shorts is staggering. When this squeeze happens it'll be huge.

Well it's been a hot second since our last update. As a group we lost 4% since our June update. Underwhelming.

@JVM225 continues to hold the top spot. Most shocking this time around was the move on HTZ with @Jimmy Buoy. That guy went from dead last ($1200 in the hole) in our last update to third place this time around!

Like Warren Buffet says, success in the stock market takes great patience! (and he holds for DECADES waiting for the right sell price). With Hertz's surprising move to purchase an initial order of 100,000 Tesla Model 3 cars at full price will shake up the entire car rental industry, forcing the others to try and also obtain EV's for customers or risk being at a disadvantage. Only problem is... lack of supply due to skyrocketing demand!

Knocking on the door to two years old, this thread! No updates since October '21 so I figured it was time.

Notable Notes:
I'm not sure our new leader is still around CSR (Susanandlance)? He's probably retired on his 800% return. AA takes the lead for this update. It's interesting that among all of our stock choices American Airlines is the only one up today vs October. All the rest of us have lost value.

@JVM225 holds on to second place but still commands the title of leading the most laps. @Ezsteps and @Third Edition have both found themselves in the red this time around.

We started with $65k amongst us. We peaked at $174k last June. It's been downhill since...resting at $94k now.

What was I thinking? I bought 45 shares of John Deere (DE) back in April '20 for $138.63 ($6238), and it's currently at $385.58/$17,351! If I figure correctly, that's a 278% increase. Hindsight...
