Official Caterpillar3116/3126 Thread

@mrsrobinson. If your brother-in-law is a certified caterpillar mechanic there is nothing on that engine raw water cooled or otherwise that that man should not be able to fix! These are the simplest engines and cooling systems ever designed by mankind!
Agreed, and he said the same, he's ready to jump in and do it. The concern for me is he has never serviced after coolers before, and everything I read says this is critical, get it right. Diesel mechanic quoted me 10-12 hours, money well spent IMHO. I wish I could be there to watch and learn though.

When are you "closing" on this deal? (if that's the right term) Seems like the seller and broker would be pushing this sale hard to minimize their risk.

I was waiting for oil analysis reports to come back, which as of the day they both have. I've also been waiting for invoices from the broker as well to confirm work was done.

All of the underwater zincs were reported as deteriorated during hull survey. Seller states he has since had them all replaced by a diver, no invoice though. It's not a deal breaker, I just need to know if I need to do a short haul to have them replaced. The broker states the diver is getting him an invoice.

Oil samples are good? Not clear from your post.

The boat needs to be hauled out for a complete survey, do not close without it...

in my opinion, your posts are getting old. Buy the boat or not.

This explains why the cooling lines going to the shaft seals were stopped up:

So, do i take it to a radiator shop?

soak it in a bath of phosphoric acid?

take any of the fittings out and pour some mixture in there to soak?

What about that stainless ring?

This is much different (AND HEAVIER) than my stainless, clean as a whistle (cause I fresh water /salt away flushed) Yanmars

Guess the turbo may not be installed this weekend.

BEST !

Your advice is appreciated.

Can someone please circle or point out where you would install the loop to circulate the cleaning solution?
so the end would be at the pump housing. where would u install the beginning at.

thanks

For everyone except @Sgrochow, the oil analysis for both engines came back good. Mildly high iron but Blackstone Labs was not concerned since the #s were consistent across both engines and the run hours were low. Broker knows I am ready to close, just waiting on him.

One of the best sounds there is. They sound very healthy
Last year when i was waiting for me spring sea trail. i must of watched this video a thousand times. not my boat but just hearing the music and the turbos spool up.... its about the minute mark

Yeah, the music is bad, real bad, otherwise love it.

There's a gorgeous 450DA slipped next to the 380DA I am buying, I stare at it for minutes when I walk by, definitely a head turner.

I have a quick story, to hopefully make you feel better about your choice of boat. When I first got my diesel boat, I became close friends with a guy 10 plus years older than me, who owned a 2000, 380da, gas boat. Unfortunately his 380 was approaching 800 hours, and every year we went on trips he knew he would have to rebuild or replace the engines soon. One year he lost a month plus of boating, having one of his engines rebuilt.

When our marina friends would go out to a restaurant, on Long Island, we would sometimes take one boat. The first time he drove my boat, he was amazed at how well it handled in close quarters and docking. For the record he was a great docker with his 380 gasser.

Another year, I decided to run my boat from Long Island, NY to Florida, keep it there for the winter and then bring it back in the spring. I was between jobs, but I was an exec and under contract for 18 more months, including healthcare. I called this my practice retirement and my wife called it my mid life crisis. He aways said, if he had diesels on his 380, he would have done the trip with me. He even looked for a 380 diesel for short time, but as you know there are not many of them - It’s almost a Unicorn, Sea Ray. Unfortunately, not too long after my Florida trip, he wound up selling his boat, due to health issues. He always regretted not having a diesel boat to do long runs.

In short, you are buying a great boat! Over the next decade or two, the price of gas/diesel will go up and down. The stock market and the value of tour money will fluctuate too. And unfortunately, there will be wars along the way. But life is short and none of us know when we will take our last breath. Go confidently and close on this 380da diesel and make memories, because at the end of the day, this is what life is all about! Good luck with the closing!

Thank you, well said.

I am full speed ahead, waiting on the broker now.

I realized some of my anxiety was around getting the boat home, finding a marina I like, not a lot of time between closing and taking it home, etc. I decided to keep the boat where it is until the end of April, to give me time to learn it, get it ready, do service/maintenance, get a VHF radio, enjoy it, etc. before the long trip home on open water. As soon as I made the decision I felt a weight come off of my shoulders.

And yes, I plan to use the boat like crazy with those diesels, regardless of the price of fuel. That boat performed better than any cruiser style gas boat I have ever been on during sea trial. It feels solid, stable, smooth. No loud whining gassers at 3500+ RPMs to keep here on plane. The bow laid down and the cruise was amazing at 2300 - 2400 RPMs.

I am thankful to all of those on here who said "get diesel..." I get it now.

Yep. Diesels are amazing! Wait until you practicing docking and see the response. I have a dock mate with the same boat as mine except his has the 7.4's in it. He will not ride on my boat because he doesn't want to get "jealous" of the diesels but he does remark "how much water it moves" around the dock. (He is on CSR but I won't name him...)

The 450 is my second diesel boat.

Owned the first for 20.5 years

Would never have anything else.

Plus - the CAT 3126 has NO ELECTRONICS to fail

Simple mechanical diesel, and reasonably efficient.

And to quote Dani-Lu ....GO OUT THERE AND MAKE THOSE MEMORIES !

BEST !

Funny thing.....

During my search for a 450DA I came across that video and watched it numerous times.

I was in Baltimore looking at a 450 to buy, the owner took me out for a run.

She had 3126 Cats

Was my first time out on the water on a 450.

Although that boat had numerous issues and nothing was consummated in Baltimore, it was THAT SEA TRIAL that sealed the deal.

Ended up in Marina Del Rey California - guess I drank the Cool Aid

and THANK YOU DR. WEBSTER !

Enjoy your boat !

P.S. here's a couple of THOSE Baltimore pix:
