So the zerk fitting will apply grease directly above the seal then? Would it make sense to drill and tap the fitting while the pin is out thereby not having to worry about stopping at the steel part of your previous post? In that pic above, is the little hole where the bushing goes the hole for the zerk fitting? And just for clarification, is the wider recess at the mouth of the channel where the seal sits? Thanks for all the help. I will be tackling this as soon as all the parts come in. One more question, are all zerk fittings the same size and thread pitch?

OK, So I am almost finished with the hinge pin repair. went pretty smooth so far. I am getting ready to put the drive back on the bell housing and am wondering if I should put anything on the flat mating surfaces of the drive and bell housing for additional sealing? As I see it in diagrams, there is not supposed to be anything on the surfaces but this seems like a potential problem if water finds it's way between the seam. Thanks

I have never used anything other than the gasket set installed dry. I have removed/installed dozens of drives and have never had a leak there.

Thanks for the replies guys. Now that the drive is back together, I have approx. 1/2 " play in the drive when push/pulling it side to side from the outside rear of the boat with my hands. Is that normal play? Hopefully that is just a bit of play in the steering mechanism that is allowing me to move the drive a bit with my bare hands.

have someone move the drive while you watch from inside to see what moves.

OK.. So I was in the water this past weekend and for the most part, I think I have solved my leaking issues YAY. However, at the end of my day out, I did find approx. 20-24 oz of water drain when I pulled the plug. At this point, I feel that it could be water that has been trapped in the depths of the bottom of the boat and is making its way to the rear when I am maneuvering while underway. Thanks for everyone's help on this project. I will confirm the leaking is fixed this weekend when I stay out on her overnight.
