40 sedan bridge forum

Lets talk trim tabs.
There is another thread in elsewhere on this site but I wonder how 400 db owners are doing with theirs. Mine do almost nothing. I tested them on the hard and they do extend but the boat needs alot more. I was wondering if adding a spacer under the ram would force the tabs lower for more effect. Forgot to measure them but I think they are about 1 x 2 feet with a single ram each. Has anyone made theirs larger or installed Ziptrim interseptors? I was hoping they would be at the fall boat show but didn't find them. Digging th3 stern in is my only complaint about the boats performance.

Funny you should mention.. . I have a 44DB (same hull apparently) which is tail heavy so I inserted some spacers to make them go lower but nothing changed. I had them made longer but water pressure pushed them back up. I just added a second ram but haven’t run it yet …

Thanks for the pics. Surprised and sorry to hear that spacers didn't have any effect. Wish I had some pics to post but mine don't go as low as yours? Maybe in the spring I can take some.
I wonder if zipwakes might be an answer but can't find anyone who put them on a sea ray. They won't work over the tunnel drive portion but neither do the ones installed now. Maybe no tab right behind the props is part of the problem?

Their E series for 50 plus boats does cover the tunnel dtive area. Also can control roll or provide emergency steering according to website.

Just noticed looking at a 400 youtube, (winter withdraw) that the tunnels are actually flat across the top potentially any type of trim device could also be installed there.

My tabs make a substantial difference. Although I du usually keep them in the fully down position, I have tweaked them when weight distribution is needed. I did install the bennett drop fin set last year and notice a bit of a increase on plane as well as better turning. It helps keep water flow directly under the tab.

Looks like a very interesting (and inexpensive) option! But they ticked me off with this line:

"Attach using stainless steel machine screws with locknuts (Not Included)"

Seriously? They couldn't include 8 SS screws, washers and locknuts (and adjusted the price accordingly)?

What size hardware was needed?

I honestly do not recall. I did however stop by a local Ace Hardware and hit the 316 stainless section and bought the hardware and washers and everything for like 10 bucks. While I agree maybe due to different thicknesses? I also used screw heads for the bottom VS bolts for hydrodynamic reasons...

Thank you Jason I will order the fins tonight. Was not aware of them before your post. No real cost to try and hope I can get a set before everyone here corners the market...lol.. Still have not heard back from the zipwake people.

Does anyone know why my breaker panel on 1996 400 db has a knob in the middle to switch from shore to off to genset, others seem to not have it, I don’t see the point of it either as I have the sliders that prevent genset and shore being on at the same time . See pic

I suspect you will be disappointed with tabs over the prop tunnels due to the water turbulence behind the propellers.

That’s not factory. I’d call those guys that put the sticker on the panel. I bet they did the work putting that switch and the accessory breaker in. Might be that switch feeds that breaker only. Just a hunch.

Also, if you are comfortable doing it you can swing the panel open and visually trace the wires going to and from the switch.

the fact it’s not factory is key, thanks for that. I suspect it’s due to the fact there’s an added inverter for 110 to 240v . I’ve emailed the marine electrician anyway. Thanks again

Does anyone happen to know what size bulb goes in the indirect lighting on the galley stairs?

When our canvas is up, it funnels water onto the 2nd step up to the bridge and eventually into the locker under the stairs.

Pictured is my “temporary” fix (no clue why they only upload sideways. Sorry)

I was wondering if anyone has already solved this problem or has any suggestions?

I’ve been thinking about maybe making a hood like flashing to install on/over the locker trim.

That's because whomever designed the canvas has it attached at the top INSIDE the stairway. Mine was the same way before I had it modified. I had a local canvas guy add rework it so it only attaches along the outside vertical edges and added two snaps on the edge of the "Walkway". He also added a rubber seal along that edge.

Thanks! I like the idea of reworking the canvas so that it runs outside the walkway / side deck. Any chance you’d have a picture?

Aside from reworking the canvas, I’m hopeful there are other solutions.

It’s a pain. I cut a little bit of a rabbet and an angle on the top of the door that helped in not allowing the water to get behind the door after it dripped down off the steps. Then a few years ago, we installed PlasDeck in the cockpit and on the stairs. As a purely unintended result of the installation, the PlasDeck on the step now diverts the water down the steps so I didn’t have to worry about it any more.
I posted about the rabbet cut here back then but I’m not good at searching this site. The drip edge idea could certainly work. Good luck.

If useful, I replaced it with NAPA part BPDE3425LED-N as shown.
