Hello All
I’m new to my 400DA and was investigating installing bypasses for the hot water heater when I noticed on the Atwood EHM11 that there were outlets for a heat exchanger that are not being used.
I have twin 3116 cats and was wondering if anyone has plumbed these is in. Seems like I should take advantage of this heat source when underway.
Also any tips on the heater bypass components would be appreciated

So my 290 is the same. I’m told most of the FL salt folks unhook it after the first water heater replacement. I have so many other “fixes” that I haven’t searched the hose routing arrangement. Mine (WH) is on the starboard side so I’m going to assume that it only hooks to the starboard engine. It’s only a few years old (have the receipt) and I too would like to have hot water underway or at a friends dock with no power. Project 102, I’m on 7!

Dont have that engine(s) but can tell you this. It takes a really long long time to heat that tank off the engine. Its good if it got hot from shore power. Then the HEx helps keep it hot. But starting from scratch it’s gonna take a long long time to heat that water from the engine.
So as said above, in a heavy salt environment like south Florida, the salt will corrode the tank way before you get much benefit from it making hot shower water.

Just curious if you run with the generator why bother heating with the motors

Yes. I did it to my starboard engine. I don’t have pictures on hand. I will try to get some today. It works very well with our engines. I couldn’t testify as to how long it takes because I never monitored it. However, my shortest trip is 30 minutes and water temp is engine temp by then. I added two shut off valves at the engine so I can isolate the water tank if it fails.

I would guess a 400 has a gen, wasnt mentioned.
We have a gen but I don’t usually run it underway.
Just thinking that the water would stay up to temp for some time after we anchored
I was also goin to plumb it on the antifreeze side of the heat exchanger to separate it from lake/sea water

I just like the thought of “it’s free” plus if we are someplace on the lake with no power or only extension cord 20amp we can heat the water. One of those “if you’ve got it, hook it up” things. Not a big deal.

I had this on my four winns, worked great. I never timed it but I doubt It would take over 30 mins of run time.

I would like to add it on my 380, just not a priority.

If you can get it hooked up to the closed cooling system that would be a plus. Keep in mind that diesels run cooler than our gas guzzlers - so it may take longer (or not as hot) bit still free hot water. As for timing - for me, its about a two hour run to heat the 11gallon tank up. The internal hot water coil is not elaborate, so efficiencies are low.

Thanks for the input
I also just had the boat winterized and am trying to expedite the process
Has anyone replaced the drain plugs with high quality petcocks?
Source?
