2000 Sea Ray 510DA twin 3196 best fuel economy

660 vs 800 hp
140 hp X 2engines on a 40000 lbs boat
So 280 hp on 40,000 lbs- makes a performance difference?

Frank - do you have Cat torque curves, this would probably answer a lot and show why the 3406E's are a clear choice.

They are available at cat.com.......but it takes a while to hunt them up. Caterpillar has so much data available that searching stuff there can be a daunting challenge.

I'm not going to argue what Sea Ray publishes in marketing poop, but when you load the boat as most of us do, the real difference is more than 4 kts. The 3406 boat runs and handles like a sports car.........the 3196 ones run like a big heavy boat.
Well I've never piloted a 510 with the 3406 so i can't comment on the difference in performance, however mine idles at 10kts. In slow engine mode it's about 7kts. And as for time to plane, you had better be watching were your going when you spool up. Also isn't a there a considerable weight difference between 3406 and the 3196?. Oh, yeah isn't the 3406 the "throw away block"?

We are a minority in a sea of Cummins owners.........its hard for some to grasp that "Be sure you know where its pointed when you apply the power" thing when we discuss Caterpillar torque.

The "throw-a-way" engine is the 3208..........the 3406 is about as close as you can get to a bullet proof motor.

Well now looks like about 400ftlb diffrence, or about 20% more for the 3206. Once the additional engine weight is factored in how much do ya feel in the seat of the pants? Frank is the 8 in 3208 as in 8 cyls?

Dry weight for the 3406 is 3497lbs
Dry weight for the 3196 is 2590lbs

Difference is 907lbs X 2 =1814lbs.....about a ton...including the difference in trannys if any...

I've had all kinds of Cat engines in my Equipment (mostly cat equipment) over the years. I had never even heard of the 3196 series engine until I started looking for a boat. I looked at 8V92 detroits( which are what I prefered but you could'nt get around the bilge) 3406's and 3196's. The 3406 engine is a very good engine no doubt but the 3196's do me just fine. A lot of guys talk about speed but with the size boats they put these engines in I don't see the need for speed. I personally like cruising at 22 knots burning only 40 GPH. In my boating experiance it seems very seldom you can do much more than 20 knots and not get beat to death.
I have had no issues with my engines whatsoever. Early on they had the aftercoolers replaced on a recall. This was a very big issue as some of the replacement coolers were also failing.
I guess I feel you shouldn't look around a boat just because of engines.

In my opinion the 510 is absolutely the biggest 51 ft boat you will ever see.

You obviously haven't run a 510 w/3406's..................and apparently haven't paid attention to the aftercooler issues on 3196's.

Frank, can you elaborate on the aftercooler issues on the 3196's? You stated later in this thread that the 510 with 3406's runs like a race car but with the 3196's it runs like a big heavy boat. Do you not recommend the 510 with the 3196's?

Old thread, I know.

But I now have a 2002 510 DA with the 3196's. Is 2300 rpms WOT? for some reason I thought it was 2400 and I am not able to get close to that...my WOT this weekend was approx 2250 and top speed was 33 MPH (6 adults, Full fuel 600 gal, full water 150 gal, 75 gal in holding tank and gear.....HEAVY!). Also see black smoke when I throttle up hard from idle. I believe the previous owner had CAT put the fuel selection on both motors to RICH (A-lean, B-normal, C-Rich)..anybody know how to adjust that?

Hard Rockin,
You need access to Cat computer software to make that adjustment. For piece of mind I had a Cat tech come and take a water test with me with the computer hooked up to both mains and was able to get the vitals for each. I was chasing the black smoke issue as well. I can tell you that I started with new turbos, that took care of 80% of the smoke. I then had the aftercoolers replaced(they were original and still pretty clean). I finally bit the bullet and installed all new injectors and that made a huge difference and cleaned everything up to almost zero smoke and soot. My 3196 have 2000 hrs. They make 2350 at WOT and make 36mph with a medium/heavy load. i am very happy with them now.

Thank you for the advice. I purchased the boat this fall in Kenosha WI and got it to my marina in the Delta here in CA about a month and a half ago. Im going through the boat and getting everything dialed in...havent had a chance to drive her much but the smoke doesn't seem right to me. I will definitely get a CAT tech onboard for tests as I want her completely dialed in by summer. Hoping to take her out the Golden Gate and down the coast this spring.

What would I expect to pay for new turbos. And new injectors? I plan to pull the after coolers and have them tested and cleaned, they are both replacements. Boat has 775 hours on the CAT's.
