I think I finally found a good boat that's priced well/fair

My last two boats I used a broker of my choice to find and close on the boat I specified. I specifically did not use the listing broker.
It seems to me that any broker that is listing for a seller has an intrinsic conflict of interest representing a buyer for the same boat.
How does that work when you have your own broker ….. do they split commission or is the commission double or something in between?

Per the broker I've been working with they split it, just like a house sale.

100% agreed, and that's what I have been doing. This broker reached out to me directly though because I looked at the boat a couple years ago. I asked my buyers broker if he could work with me and he said no since contact had already been made.

I'm close to walking away from this one. I just noticed it's listed by two brokers, different prices. When I asked the broker why he said " boat is a central/exclusive listing with us......brokerages are having a tough time keeping inventory, so they scab a listing to look busy....we allow our boats to be on OYS without issue, but if you look at the other broker you'll see a disclaimer that its not their boat."

There is no disclaimer on the other brokers website. Given this will be a 1 to 2 day trip for me, and my previous issues with other boats, I asked for a quick sea trial when I come to inspect the boat. He'll have my deposit before then. He said No.

Is it winterized? I wouldn't sea trial on a refundable deposit if I were a seller in a cold region...
No, it's in the area where they typically don't winterize boats. It's in the water ready to go.

Buh, by.

When I had a boat under contract 5 hours away, part of the deal was my personal inspection within a week. I road on up there, gave it the once over, and the broker took me out for a quick run to make sure everything was good. That was a great service. Unfortunately the survey revealed some things that we couldn't come to agreement on.

Normal process is the buyer pays expenses to rewinterize after a sea trial.

I will expand on Brad's message above as this may include winterizing all systems as well as hauling and blocking and shrink wrap if applicable. That's why many deals get pushed off to the spring as your refundable deposit may not be all that refundable.

Understood, but not the case here. Boat's in the water and will not be winterized.

It looks to me like DYS is using OYS to get their boats on Yachtworld so they do not have to pay for their own subscription which is common for smaller brokerage companies to share. The Yachtworld ad lists both of their names as the contact in the ad so I really don't think anything strange is going on here.

Yup, I finally talked on the phone with the broker this morning, it's all legit.

Well, after about 6 weeks of "negotiations" I am finally walking away from this particular boat. The search continues....
SeaNile, sorry to hear that the boat didn't work out for you. I have been following your hunt and I am sure you will find a good one in the near future.

After trying to purchase a used boat in this market you guys will be ready for anything.

I would have been perfectly happy with this particular boat but I'm really not ready to gamble on buying a boat and having to incur the costs of the service, etc. An estimate is one thing but once they get in there who knows what else they may find that needs attention. Owners threw out an OK offer with them doing the service but I'm pretty sure they wanted to go with "a marine guy" rather than the MAN outfit since it would save about half the costs. Then they came down a little more "as is" and then 20 minutes came down more "as is" and then 5 minutes later said they received a verbal offer (which was more than the lowest price they offered me).

What is a "verbal offer" anyway? If they have one fantastic, if they are trying to create a sense of urgency on my behalf.....well that ain't gonna work since it's December here in the lovely NE.

The past week of communications and negotiating as all been via text. Extremely unprofessional and not the best way to convey any vital info during a negotiation if you ask me.

Oh well, on to the next!! Speaking of the next. Called the broker 2 weeks ago and never heard back. Emailed a week ago and no reply. Sent a text to one of the 3 numbers listed in the ad earlier today.....you guessed it. No reply.

Been down that road.

Sorry @SeaNile, lets grab a beer soon!

I finally had a phone conversation this morning with the broker I kind of/sort of have a contract on. He seems honest and like a good guy, time will tell.

Just a thought for both you. This is a bad month trying to do serious bidnuss.
At my company people are burning remaining vacation days, half the people aren’t there, those that are there are really not productive. The non return phone calls don’t really surprise me.
Good luck, probably be better come January. Lots of indoor boat shows and folks thinking boats again.

True, unless you are in the business of sales. Every day counts, quotas mount and deals need to be closed. Especially near the end of a month, quarter and year. Brandon, fuel prices and inflation all would have me as a broker returning calls ASAP before people change their mind or their pocketbook changes their mind for them!!

@SeaNile well said, that's what I can't understand. You look at their website, they have three to four listings yet they're always busy, never return calls, etc. I asked them simple questions, they don't know the answers. Let me ask the seller, then you never hear anything. I feel like I'm bugging them to sell the boat to me.

The boat I referenced starting this thread, I still don't know if it's for sale or not anymore. The selling broker will not get back to my buyers broker. That's why I moved on to the current one.

Ya, not in that line of work. Good luck. What I don’t get is someone wants sell a boat. If it was me I want it gone now. I would be so far up a broker digestive track he would want it sold just be rid of me. So ya, I don’t get their lazy attitude.
